Switching off alarm manually

Postby wombat » Sun Dec 04, 2016 6:51 pm

Hi all,

My remote key fob has not worked since I got the car so always lock/unlock with the key. Today the alarm went off when I opened the door, I tried the key in the door to de-activate but no joy. Only when I put key in ignition did it stop, and at least the car started on top of a freezing Dartmoor tor!

I do not have any books with the car so any advise on how to switch off manually gratefully received.

Thanks

Your remote key fob may only need re-programming. You will find the instructions on the BB. There is at least 2 different key fobs (they look the same but you need the right one) for the X100, a main dealer will tell you which one is required for your XK8.

When you lock the door with the key & hold for a few seconds the alarm will be activated. To de-activate unlock, insert key in ignition & turn to position II within 7 seconds or the alarm will be triggered.

Another feature that can be enabled (or disabled) by a Main Dealer or an Indi with the right diagnostic equipment is for the alarm system to become active if the doors remain unlocked (& undisturbed) for 30 seconds. It will NOT lock the doors.

I hope this is of use

Hi Wombat,
I went through this whole remote problem myself some years ago when I had my 3.2 XJ8 and wrote an account of what was needed. It's in the 308 section but under 'security system' and named 'fobbed off'. Hm, thinks....how come the XK8 doesn't have that section? Anyway, you are probably aware that the 308 and XK8 share (mostly) the same electronic architecture. It's also in an article somewhere in the magazine archive.

AAJ - I was unaware that the holding of the key in the 'lock' position activated the alarm - are you saying then that just locking the car with the key and not holding in that position would not activate the alarm? I know that holding the key in the lock position closes all windows and sunroof (where fitted.) This is a facility I need from Orkney when travelling on ferries with wobbly water and perhaps with valuables unavoidably on view - I do realise that no one is likely to manage to steal the car in those situations though.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for the information, it was extremely cold and blowing hard so I may have held the key longer in the lock without realising.

I was only given a single key and fob, so I have no choice - I think it needs a new battery as parked for several years before I purchased the car.

Hi Ian,

I did do some searching before posting but did not find your writeup, will look again. We are coming to the Orkney Isles (just the same as the Isles of Scilly down here) next May so will look out for your car.

Wombat,
BB is bulletin board.

PM me when you are coming to Orkney (the pedants get upset when the term 'the Orkneys' is used) and we will arrange a meet - there may be some kind of Vintage Club event around the time you are visiting and you will be most welcome to join in - they are a really friendly bunch - ask Rob J!

Ian

Oops, forgot to say your XK8 will more than likely use the LJA type fob, rather than the later LJE.

If you need the fob overhauling, if you cannot find a replacement, then have a look here;

This came from a discussion on this forum from here... http://www.jec.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=8496

"Harland" posted the info originally.
