Radio will not turn of with ignition key

Postby david.limb1 » Sat Mar 12, 2016 2:55 pm

folks
I have a 2000 model year XKR . when I turn off the ignition key the radio is staying on unless i turn it off by pressing the radio button . is their a method to reset the system ? . I have tried by disconnecting the battery but with no luck . the outcome of the above is that I am getting a flat battery within 2/3 days .

I had a similar problem on my S-type.

As the ignition key barrel wore slightly, it became possible to remove the ignition key whilst leaving the radio still working. Result if un-noticed....a dead battery next day. If the CD was working at the time, the battery would be dead in three hours!

Having noticed the issue, I had to educate myself to fully turn the key to the left before taking it from the barrel. I also learned to listen and ensure the radio did switch off as I left the car.

Perhaps a new key barrel is needed. An expensive job. May be someone else has another solution.

Mike K's suggestion is the simplest point to start the search. If the ignition barrel is worn and failing to turn off, there will be a number of drains on the battery from a variety of electronic circuits. If the radio is an aftermarket unit, it would be worth checking the wiring on it before moving on to a full diagnosis of the car's electrics using a competent Jaguar specialist. The in-car entertainment system is heavily integrated within the car's electronics so any problem beyond the simple suggestions above could be located somewhere not immediately obvious, for example, within the main instrument pack.
