IMPACT (Pedestrian) SYSTEM

Postby dyrham663 » Thu Jan 09, 2025 5:30 pm

So another fault is coming up on dash as Pedestrian System not working.

Garage thinks relevant fault code is B1005-96 LEFT FRONTAL IMPACT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR - Internal failure.

They are then a bit confused as in theory the car only has a left and right impact sensor. However, they think it also has an upper and lower set which are clearly different parts.

The lower set are grey down in the back of the bumper. The upper black ones are on the cross member above the radiator and can be seen once the plastic cover is taken off. See pictures below although the lower sensor is difficult to make out. I am thinking that the upper ones are something else as the pedestrian would be well dead by the time that sensor is hit ...?

Upper 'Sensors' Black in front of Green crossmember. Follow the crossmember up from the bottom of picture. Just past the grey circle thing you can see a small black part if you zoom in. You can just about make out the other mirror image sensor on the other side if you follow the crossmember up.
Pedsyssensorlower.jpg
Lower sensor, difficult to see from picture. The torch is pointed at it. You can see the upper sensor. Left of the Grey circle as you view the picture but actually right or inside relative to the way the car is pointing.. Athough it is black against the black of the radiator
Can anyone advise? Thanks Steve.
PS Is it an MOT failure if the Pedestrian system is not working..? Garage were not sure on that either!

As an XK8 owner/maintainer, I don't have any direct experience of working on this system, however, I do have in my technical library/collection, a document with a detailed description that will accurately put you and your garage in the relevant picture. There are two upper sensors that are accelerometers and a single broad impact sensor across the front of the bumper beam, behind the bumper cover. How and what they do is covered in detail as well as diagnostics and how to remove and replace them.

The document itself is too large for me attach to this reply, but if you pm me with your email address, I can get it to you via WeTransfer.

The diagnostic code quoted refers to the left hand pedestrian accelerometer (item 7 in Astromorg's diagram) which is listed by Jaguar as part number C2P5129 (£84.34 + VAT). Mike.

Re comments, I agree the pedestrian sensors are definitely behind the bumper.

In the depths of last Winter one of my pedestrian sensors failed and as my XK is my daily drive I decided a cold wet time on the drive was not for me.

According to the Jaguar specialist I use, the pedestrian impact sensor fail is a common problem. The effort to get at one of the sensors (removing bumper et al) is such, that they feel it is worth doing both sensors at the same time as failure in the remaining working one may not be far behind.

Good luck , Mark

Thanks. Mine is the X150 version. I think Astromogs diagram is the older XK8. Is the part number the same?

Luckily my garage say they can get to it without taking the bumper off.

I’m wondering if the other sensors on the cross beam control the airbags inside the car which would go off in the event of a more serious crash?
In fact a search of SNG Barratt shows them as part number C2P3922 'Front Airbag impact sensor'. This may be why second hand ebay sellers have got the two parts confused.

The diagrams and information from Astromorg is for the X-150 model.
