Which OBD 11 Scanner for a 2004 XK8?

Sorry if this question has been asked, and answered before, but I have searched as best I can, but have been unable to find a definitive answer; if such a thing exists! Some say the iCarsoft i930, which I believe has now been superceded by the iCarsoft LR V1.0. I did read from one contributor that it was good on an X150, but not the X100, hence the question.

An alternative for a bit more money is the iCarsoft LR V2.0. Would this be more beneficial? Any others? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ian,

I decided to future proof when selecting a code diagnostic tool. I needed a tool for our Jaguars and Land Rover and also potential other makes for the family as well as cars I might buy in the future. I had a look at the LR1 and thought it had limited functionality. In the end I went for the CR PRO as it covers multiple brands, I understand the CR PRO has the same functionality as the LR3.0 which is software restricted to Jaguar Land Rover vehicles . The tool works very well on my 1998 XK8 and at £45 a time for a fault code read at my local independent it is well on the way to paying for itself.

It depends what you want the scanner to do. If you just want to know what has caused the MIL to come on and to be able to clear the fault code when appropriate, then a simple ELM 327 type scanner that connects with an app on your mobile phone will do well. The cheap, blue plastic ELM readers have proved very hit or miss for reliability so I would recommend a Viecar reader at about £20 such as this one

and read it with the Torque Pro app for Android or one of the OBD apps offered by Apple for their phones. Some times it struggles to identify exactly what a fault code means, but it almost always gives the code itself and you can the pursue the meaning by Googling.

In addition to fault codes it can also display basic engine parameters like engine temp, fuel pressure, long and short term fuel trims and airflow Actually I would recommend everyone should have one of them in each car they run for an immediate ability to discover why the MIL has come on.
