low coolant message 2005 xk8

Hi does anyone know the best way to get air out of the coolant system as I have been told by a jag garage that this is my problem I have raised the front of the car and run the car to temp.with cap of but nothing seems to happen you don't see any air bubbles and low coolant still shows
any advice would be appreciated thanks

Hi and welcome

earlier cars ( similar version to yours ) had a well known issue with the actual coolant level sensor

this is a simple reed switch and magnet

firstly , make sure the magnet floats on the coolant inside the coolant tank ( when cool for safety reasons ) , if the sensor magnet moves up and down then the sensor that is inserted under the tank will be your issue , it simply unplugs and pulls out downwards, no fluid will be lost as its in a ' pot ' in the plastic

obtain a new sensor ( around £30 from memory ) and bobs ur uncle as they say

otherwise, your coolant is actually low.....

Hi replaced sensor removed tank and made sure sensor was not stuck this was a week ago green flag used a diagnostic code reader to turn the message of together with the engine manegment light I now have my own pro jaguar diagnostic reader I have turned of engine manegment light but the low coolant light stays on I think I have to look further into the reader and reset the coolant light if I can find it try again tomorrow

If you have replaced the sensor and still get the message, check the plug connector and associated wiring to make sure you don't have a short. Also ensure the coolant tank is filled to the correct level.

Hi Guys

I have same problem (re-occurred after around 5 years).

The problem I have is the Coolant Tank itself - the sensor tests fine & wiring good

Having replaced the tank 5 years ago (for same reason) at around £100 I decoded not to fill Jaguars' coffers further & fitted a link into the sensor wiring socket - Warning Light no longer glows & I now check coolant level by eye once a week.

Hi yes I was thinking of doing that and forget about the warning and just check the level .But looked on ebay and found new jaguar tanks with cap and sensor for £49 + p.p when I took the old one of previously and washed it on shaking it you could hear a rattle i.e the float but the new one on shaking is louder fitted it and it now seems ok. With linking the wiring out I wondered if it would trigger any fault codes as it is no problem to check level weekly

I still have my original tank & was intending to cut open to see what is at fault.

Linking out the level sensor does not trigger any fault codes as the system thinks the sensor is there (there is no chip etc. to pass pack information - it is just a plain on/off switch triggered by a magnet) & doing it's job.

I suspect the tank you found on e-bay is non-jaguar & I've heard that some of these tanks fall apart at the seams (glue melts!). That said, I've not heard of an XK8 one going faulty but it would be wise to keep an eye out.
