XK8 brake lights on all the time

Postby jyates » Mon Aug 01, 2016 4:28 pm

My 1997 xk8 has developed a problem in that the brake lights are on all the time but go out when you lift the brake pedal slightly. I have read the other articles on how to change but is it possible to adjust the brake switch arrangement without the need to replace it?

Hi,
I had some fun with an XK8 brake switch and posted how I managed to change the switch without changing the supporting bracket.
I am going from memory now but there was nothing in the arrangement to adjust. There is a pin on the brake pedal lever which activates a rocker type switch in the switch unit but the positions are all fixed relative to one another.
All I can suggest is that you check the pedal pin for foreign body 'add ons' and check that the switch hasn't come loose on the switch bracket or the switch bracket hasn't been bent by a big foot. (No offence intended but there's not much room down there!)
Access is tight but if you carefully remove the knee bolster (two screws under the steering column) and the valet switch it is possible to get a hand in to feel. Getting sight of the problem will not be an option.
Good luck.
