Hi All,
My key fob for my 1999 XK8 only works at a distance of a few feet from the car and I have to press the buttons quite hard. I would like to buy a new one and have looked on ebay but am confused as there seem to be many different ones available. Could anyone suggest a good supplier at a reasonable price ? Main dealer prices are ridiculous and SNG Barratt not much cheaper. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Before you buy new and go to the expense of getting a fob programmed to your car, try this.

Prize off the rear cover and remove the old battery. Clean the contacts with a pencil rubber and fit a new battery. That may fix it.

You can extend the range by holding the fob against your head when you are at a distance. You then act like a big aerial!

If you have to purchase a new fob, make sure it is suitable for UK market cars by asking for the frequency stamped on the back of the fob. It is not unknown for sellers to sell new fobs destined for markets where the XK8s use a different frequency from UK cars. Mike.

Don't know if you ever got this problem sorted but for your information I have just purchased a new key fob in sealed Jaguar packet from , yes, you guessed it ! Ebay

Just wanted to pass on the information, as a newbie to the marque, that I have received

I was steered in the right direction, once again, by "orkney" (thanks !!)
Mine is an LJB2610-BB, on a 2002 model, and as I understand it your '99 will be a different code but presumably still stamped on the back of the existing remote.
So, in theory, you just need your code and someone selling same version.

I guess someone, more knowledgeable than I, will be along to advise shortly

I programmed it, along with the old one, in the time it took for the kettle to boil !
Really easy procedure which has been documented / passed on, on these hallowed pages before.

Many thanks for your reply. Must admit I haven't done anything about buying a new fob just been using my old one by holding it close to my head but will have a look on eBay. If the worst comes to the worst I have found a local garage who can supply a key and fob at not too bad a price.

Just to bring things up to date. I ended up buying a new fob from the local Jaguar main dealer and then programming it myself using instructions I found on another forum. It is very easy to do and involves no computers or software.
Put key into ignition, pull back headlamp flasher and then turn key to position one. flash headlamps 4 times then led on j-gate will flash. press the lock-unlock button on the fob 5 times and hey presto job done. Main dealer wanted 50 quid plus vat to programme the fob ! Hope this saves people some dosh.

As a matter of interest do you mind saying how much the dealer charged you for the fob?

I didn't even ask the dealer as I thought they might be a bit expensive... after having bought a fob for my VW van I had to sit down to recover !!

main dealer price for the fob was £130. I know, a real rip off but I looked at the ones on e-bay and they were all second hand and still £70 so I was a bit dubious as to their longevity. At least now I have a fob that should last a while.

called Autotronics who are based in Leicester They specialise in the repair and servicing of transmitter key fobs etc.
I sent my old fob to Autotronics by post and it was returned within a few days in perfect working order at a cost of £43
Which included VAT and delivery
Could be worth a try if you have the same problem

That's interesting, did you have to re-programme the fob? If they had it dismantled then I presume you did.
I paid £32 for a new fob, genuine Jaguar, after a bit of searching the net but I think it may have been easier to find for my 2002 model than the earlier ones which are apparently a different code to my version.
