Plug top coils

Postby WULLIE4567 » Wed Jul 02, 2014 12:26 am

Hi All
I have a 2000 MY xk8 114000 miles 4.0ltr coupe, I seem to be going through quite a few plug top coils, replaced with second hand ones from e-bay,wee while later another one will go :( . someone told me to buy some spray on electrical sealer coats coils with plastic clear film, I used to use it on my old mini's ( that was some time ago ) hard to buy it now but found some on internet. Could there be a problem somewhere causing coils to pack in ??? any help would be appreciated.

in short....no

the on plug coil is a sealed device electrically , even though you can see the outer winding plates , its the internal windings that have broken down , from use and heat, and bad plugs can also bring them down

i would advocate changing all the plugs for genuine units, and then get known good coils to fit on them

yes, that could mean buying new....

hope this helps

I fully agree with Brake Buster.

Worn or misfiring spark plugs are the quickest way to wreck plug on coils.

I would replace all spark plugs immediately and then individually replace coils as needed. It is worth buying one new or known good condition pre used coil to use if you do not have diagnostic gear to hand. Substitution of each engine coil pack in turn with trying the new coil will eradicate a misfire if a duff coil is found. In any case it is always worth having a spare coil kept in the car to have if a breakdown occurs when away from home.
