Passenger window activation problem.

Postby MarkGeorge » Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:30 pm

The passenger window on my 2000 XKR has aways being a bit slow, both up and down and in the cold can get really lazy. Still slow, it has now developed a new additional problem, it operates in increments going either up or down, this occurs both when opening the door, or when selecting the window to operate from its switch. The increments are about 2-3 inches at a time. Perhaps the most frustrating aspect is that when the door is closed the window does not close again and any further pulls of the door handle will solicit another downward increment. I have attempted to reset the windows memory using the methods described in previous posts, but without successes, so assume a more fundamental problem has developed. Meanwhile, the drivers door window remains fully operational.

Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Regards Mark.

Hi Mark,
The slow operation of the window could be due to either a slicky/damaged guide or a defective motor, the former being more common. There are window guide lubricants available in accessory shops but you may have to strip off the trim panel to reach the affected location(s) to apply the lubricant. The second problem (moving in increments) does sound rather like a defective latch mechanism. The latch microswitches can fail and cause such symptoms. The latches are expensive to buy from Jaguar so the most cost effective route would be to buy a second hand latch from a reputable breaker. Alternatively, if you are a dab hand with electronics, you could try replacing the microswitches (not available separately from Jaguar). Try curing the sticky guide issue first in case it is also responsible for the second problem. Mike.
