Key fobs not working

Postby Hawkeye » Sat Dec 24, 2011 11:07 pm

Hi
Can anyone tell me how to re-program the key fobs. Both my fobs (for my XK8(W reg) have started working intermittantly and now won't work at all. I'm having to lock via the key.
Any suggestions why this happens? I see it has been suggested that static from bags/pockets can corrupt the code. Both have new batteries!

Any help appreciated
Peter

Peter, If you have 2 Fobs you MUST do both at same time or the second will not work until re-programmed & if done at a later date the 1st would them be unusable.

Re-Programming instructions:
Hold the high beam flash on.
Place key in ignition, turn to position 1.
Operate the flash 4 to 5 times.
A faint chime may be heard, but the red LED on the J-gate will flash.
Press any button on the remote once, you will see the same LED on the J-gate flash again.

Turn key off and remove from ignition before operating the remote again. Remote should now be programmed.

Repeat for 2nd Fob.

Job done!

Good Luck

Hi Allen,

Many thanks for the fob re-programming procedure.
I will give it a go and report back.

All the best for 2012.

Hi Allan

The re-prgramming procedure worked up to the point where I had to press a button on the fob in the hope that the red light on the J gate would respond. It didn't, no matter which buttons I pressed the J gate light refused to respond. This was the same result for both fobs! Fobs still would not lock or unlock the car. However, after a short drive around one of the fobs suddenly came to life and would lock the car. But later would not unlock. Neither fobs are working now!

Any other suggestions ?
Regards
Peter

Peter

This sounds like you have a problem somewhere.

It is unlikely for both fobs to be faulty.

A visit to your local Independent Specialist with Diagnostic Equipment is called for. They will be able to interogate your XK's system history & also test the security sub-system for faults.

Hi all those who gave advice re my XK8 key fobs not working.

It was simple, wrong batteries. These fobs require two CR2016, not one CR 2032.

My 2000MY Xreg XJ8 has an update which advises the use of 1 CR2032.
All very confusing!!

Cheers

Hi Peter ,
Glad you have it sorted

According to the handbook information, XK8 model year 2000 onwards cars use the CR2032 battery. Unfortunately, Jaguar doesn't provide online access to the earlier handbooks so I can't check them. Perhaps a BB reader with an earlier car could enlighten us? :?: Mike.

Hi Mike ,
I guess I could have a look in my own cars Handbook  ,
that's assuming that information is in the drivers handbook wallet

All the best ,

Nik

Edit ..... Checked all my handbooks , can't see any mention of remote batteries :|

I may be preaching to the converted - this type of battery is numbered by its respective size.
i.e. a 2032 = 2 mm thick X 32 mm diameter.
Sorry if you all knew that. Er - I'll get me coat....

No Michael , didn't know that , handy to know though
you learn something new every day

Pulled two of my remotes to bits last night ,
Both are fitted with 2X CR2016 each ,
so according to Michael , 2mm thick by 16mm diameter , which is spot on :D ,

All the best ,

Interesting indeed.

My early S-type has the 2032 but perhaps of more interest was this moulded series of figures within the battery holder half of the fob. >PPE + PA< The fob has global lock and unlock together with boot unlock functions. Presumably PPE is the global function and PA is the boot unlock?

The PC board within the fob has a four numeric code sticker signed with a ball point pen by something called a human being............. It is different different number in each fob which differs by 60. ie 1234 and 1294. Presumably these two codes are harmonised to the central locking module within my car? Although I have an S-type, its electrical/electronic systems closely resemble those in the XK upon which it was based.

( As I understand it, there are some 30,000 rolling code combinations within the car locking module but that fact probably has little to do with the four digit numeric code within a fob.)

Is it worth me noting within my car record file both PC board numbers in case a key and fob be lost? I appreciate the chance of ever finding a second hand fob with a correct number would be unlikely. I just wondered if theoretically one were to obtain a fob with one of those two code numbers, whether it would work?

Sorry. I`ve sent the thread off course a tad. I`ll delete if anyone thinks this post is inappropriate.

Hi All

I think PA could be Panic Alarm

You don't need same board numbers when replacing Remots but I was told you need same series (molded code on exterior of rear casing)

My Remotes are LJE2610-BB (so series BB)

Pages 2-4 to 2-6 in my Driver's Handbook (JJM 18 20 14/20) (2002) details the Remote & all its functions (i.e. for Panic Alarm press the Headlamp button 3 times in 3 seconds) & battery requirements (1 CR2032)

Some of the features of the Security System can be changed via the Jaguar or some non-Jaguar Diagnostic equipment (eg you can have just the indicator lights flash when arming & dis-arming)

Hi Mike,
I suspect that PPE is polyphenylene and PA means polyamide (nylon). Plastic materials are relatively difficult to sort for recycling so it helps to mark them.
Vehicle manufacturers use different transmitter frequencies for different markets as well as incorporating extra functions or deleting them. Ebayers might well know to their cost, it's important to know the transmission frequency (MHz) before buying. It too is often stamped on the case. Mike.
