My 97 XK8 has a fob seperate to the key. Only one of my 3 fobs worked so I got a price to replace from main dealer as they said they were 'shot'. Approx £160 each ! I bought new batteries £1.99 and recoding instructions on e bay - 99p. Voila! job done for under three quid.
Feeling adventurous I am now wondering if I can buy a flip fob like that on my S type, recode it and have the blade cut to match the existing seperate keys.
I have seen comments about the key having to be coded as well as the fob but this can be done by better locksmiths. Can anyone expand on this please?

eBay mate always a few on there usually go for £20-£30 
As far as I know the S-type key is more like the Mondeo one, the XK key although similar is slightly longer than Fords and has more "cuts"
I had 2 done by Timpsons, they count the cuts and get them cut at their HQ who then send them to your local branch who can then clone the code over from your existing key

Hi Mike, I paid £45 for two a year ago, but that may be because the messed up a couple of times(1st read the cuts wrong, 2nd cut them on unchipped keys 
) They do sometimes have offers of 2nd key half price, when I got two chipped keys done for my Ford Probe they were £25 each or two for £37.50

Strange this, I have had to change batteries twice or three times, owned her for 7 years now, on two fobs (the handbook suggests they should be changed bi-annually) and never had to do any reprogramming, they just still worked after the battery change.
I would however find it interesting to know how to reprogramme the fobs should it be neccessary, so how about putting the instructions on the forum for everyones benefit?

Hi,
Here are the fob programming instructions I've used successfully on my X300 and which I suspect are common to the whole range of cars. Open the boot lid and driver's door. Switch on the ignition. Press the valet switch 5 times. The system should chirp to indicate it is in the learning mode.
Remember that cars with seat/mirror/steering wheel memory functions will link the first remote to memory 1, second to memory 2 etc.
Press the lock, button of the remote. The system will chirp to confirm it has received the signal. If it doesn't receive any signals for 15 seconds it will chirp twice and exit the learning mode.
To programme extra remotes, press the valet switch once. The system will chirp twice for remote number two, three times for number three etc, then press the lock button of the remote you want to programme as above.
When you have finished wait 15 seconds for the system to time out and chirp twice. Turn off the ignition, close the doors and boot lid.
If you are quick when you change batteries, reprogramming isn't necessary. If you dither, it is. Mike.

No Mike it's different for the XK

Operate the flash 4 to 5 times.
You will probably not hear the chime as it can be very faint., but the red LED will light briefly on the J-gate.
Press any button on the remote once, you will see the same LED on the
J- gate flash again.
Turn key off and remove from ignition before operating the remote again. Remote should now be programmed

Paul, thanks for that info. I have just been to a main dealer to ask a price for replacement remote fob. Quote of £67 incl VAT for the part, but then £25 plus VAT to code it to my car which will take them 45 minutes to do!
Doesn't quite match your description which looks like about 5 minutes top! (Trying to justify the extortionate £25 plus vat? )
My fob is part number LJ2610-BB. I have seen one on ebay which is LJ2610-BC. Can anyone tell me if they are compatible? OR should I purchase the new one from the main dealer and match it to the car myself using Bassman's insider knowledge?

Damian, Be careful when you buy your fob. As mentioned elsewhere on the BB, the North American fobs use a different frequency and people try to sell them in the UK! To be sure, stick to fobs with the same number on the reverse. Mike.

Update on my key fobs query.
Took my remote to a Jag main dealer (I know! I know! Dick Turpin...men in masks...daylight robbery, etc!!
). As stated before, the code for it is LJE2610-BB. Didn't have the car with me so asked for the same part number. Was given a LJE2610-BC. Asked if it would definitely work (got assurance I could definitely take it back if not).
The worrying thing on the packaging is that it says "Made to Jaguar Specifications in the U.S.", but the inner packing definitely stated 433.92 MHz, so I was happy.
Tried Paul's info, which worked for my old remote, but not the new one (cue panic!). Went back indoors for extra light on the subject and prized the new fob open in case there wasn't a battery fitted. The battery was there, but there is a protective oil smeared over the contacts and battery to stop the charge from draining in storage. Cleaned it all up, and retried the procedure... Hey Presto! 2 working remotes!
Of course, I could have picked that remote up off ebay for half the price, but I couldn't have known for sure that it would work, so a lesson there for others.
Thanks again Bassman for the trick! Takes less than 10 seconds per remote and the dealer wanted to charge £29.37!!!
