Window glass staying up with door open

Postby Pete » Thu Nov 17, 2005 12:27 am

Having recently purchased a 97 XK8 from a Jaguar main dealer, we were surprised when the windows started to lift back to their closed position when the doors were open. This resulted in not being able to lock the car nor set the alarm!.

Despite trying several ways to reset the widow module we could not get the glass to go down. A quick call to the Jaguar warranty people soon had a repair agent attending, he was able to get the glass down and then we reset the window.

A call to the main dealer had it booked in the following day, the service dept fitted new microswitches to the door lock assemblies. Apparently these are now available at around £5.00 each , before a complete door door catch assembly had to be fitted at around £180.00.

The service dept told me that the microswitches collect dust and damp, don't then operate as they should and the door control module gets wrong inputs.

Walking around the XK's seminar recently I noticed a few door seals showing signs of the glass having been in the up position, how common is this problem?

Window glass staying up with door open

Postby mike020150 » Thu Nov 17, 2005 6:40 pm

My '97 XK8 had an occasional habit of losing its door settings. I never got to the bottom of it but I had a strong suspicion that it occurred after the vehicle had had a particularly long spell (more than one week) without use. Since it also had the original battery when I sold it a couple of months' ago, I put the bad habit down to voltage loss from an ageing battery. However, it could equally well have been early signs of microswitch failure.

Window glass staying up with door open

As mentioned by David Marks in the recent seminar it is a known issue of windows losing memory if the battery is low or not in good condition.

Going down!

Postby g4syv » Tue Aug 29, 2006 9:50 am

Hi all. I think the day for the gallon of petrol and a box of matches is drawing closer every day with my XK8.

The drivers door glass has now started to lower when you touch the handle, just as it should but does not raise again when the door closes. Also if you touch the door handle a second or third time ( either inside or out) the window lowers again. THe passenger side is OK.

I have followed the threads on the forum and there is a mention of "re setting "the system for the auto windows but no info on how to do it. Holding the key on the door kock will not lift the window back into place so I have to go to the passenger side, climb over to the window switch, lift the window, remove the key from the ignition then lock the car. A bit of a pain.

Any ideas on which part to check first would be welcomed. I dont want to strip down the door trim to get to the micro switches if I can check them first.
The car battery is good and the remotes are working.

Many thanks
Richard.

ps. when coding key fobs you must do ALL of them at the same time or you will find the spares wont work.

Richard, window reset gen for XK8 et al. (Third time I've posted this!)

Assuming the window is not 'up' and the door is shut:
Lower the window until you hear the relay click. Raise the window until you hear a similar click, lower the window 'click', raise again ditto.
This should do it. Each window has its own memory setting.
Good luck!
Michael

Michael, many thanks but it must be another fault. I will have to try the micro switches in the door.

I do love Jaguars but my last one ( XJ8) cost a fortune in repairs when compared to ALL of the BMW's I have owned and this one is looking just as bad.

I don't think the build quality is good enough to put a Jaguar badge on the front.

Many thanks
Richard

Richard,

I'm afraid myquest did not give you the correct information to reset the window lifts. You must lower the window and HOLD the switch in the down position for 6 secs to set the memory in the module, you then raise the window and HOLD the switch in the raise position for 6 secs to set the up position in memory. Try opening the door and see that it is working correctly if not repeat the operation if that fails then there is another fault.
It is common for the window memory to be lost when the battery is down or at its last period of life.

Drivers window drops about 1cm then...

Postby jagetype » Sun Nov 02, 2008 9:47 pm

Whilst driving on the motorway the window dropped as if sensor thought door was open the door lock disengaged the interior light came on. The display indicated door open, then went very intermitent later in the journey the window started to lower itself to fully open managed to get it up again(ha ha) the car was just playing games with me. Arrived home locked the car 20 mins later alarm goes off. Car now left open whilst looking for a solution tried the 6 sec thing still faulty any help before being stitched by my dealer would be greatly appreciated.

Bern.

The big question is why this fault never occurs in the summer!
Joking apart, assuming you've checked the harness for damage, this fault does sound like the usual microswitch or a memory module failure. If you're prepared to DIY, substituting new microswitches would be the most cost effective way forward to avoid dealer diagnostic charges. If it doesn't work it won't have cost too much. Mike.

I am having exactly the same problem with my 2003 XKR. The window will not reset using the standard reset method. At the same time as this began the chimes that remind you that the lights are when the door is opened also stopped working. Would anyone know if these faults could be connected? I intend to replace the micro switches, but have no idea where they are located. Can anyone help?

Hi Ronnie,
There is a door ajar switch which is possibly the guilty party in both instances. The switch is attached to the door latch assembly and accessed by removing the door card and the door latch. To avoid accidentally repositioning the door glass, make sure you mark the position of the door glass runners when you remove their fixings. Mike.

Hi Mike

I wondered it could be a coincidence that both problems occurred at the same time. The door ajar switch (now that I know there is one!) sounds very probable. Thanks for your help.

Kind regards

Ronnie
