lifting my 2001 XKR?

Postby ashcloud » Fri Feb 28, 2014 12:03 pm

Hi Gents
I have an XKR and I want to lift it onto jacks. I dont have these nice hydraulic lift that they have in the shop so I have to do it with a strong single point lift (the pump up type). Hope the description is good enough. Now my problem is where can I position that lift to raise the car high enough to fit the jacks under the standard lifting points (4)
I would like to change brakepads discs and bushings if necesarry and check the ball joints too. When done I will add new tires to be ready for summer.
Thanks
Bernhard

Jaguar is quite specific about jacking and issued the following safety instructions:

1.
WARNINGS:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RAISE THE VEHICLE BY LIFTING ONE FRONT WHEEL.

DO NOT POSITION THE JACK HEAD ON THE ALUMINUM SUSPENSION CROSSBEAM.

To raise both front wheels:
1.Position the jack centrally under the front body crossmember.
2.Raise the vehicle.
3.Place suitable vehicle stands in position at the front vehicle jacking points.
4.Lower the vehicle onto the vehicle stands.

2.
To raise both rear wheels:
1.Position the jack centrally under the rear suspension subframe.
2.Place a block of wood between the jack head and the subframe.
3.Raise the vehicle.
4.Place suitable vehicle stands in position at the rear vehicle jacking points.
5.Lower the vehicle onto the vehicle stands.

Treat the above as 'gospel' and all should be well. Mike.

i always found it useful to use the factory jack to raise the car to a level that a trolly jack can be placed under the car securely . and then proceed from there . i have to do this to my very low XJS .

but as with anything involving jacking up a car make sure you are on level ground and chock the wheels that stay on the ground, as the handbrake doesn't work at the front , you would be surprised how many people dont think about this ,

as ever , work safe !

NEVER rely on the trolly jack if your working under the car ,

and ' break ' the wheel nuts before you lift the car off the floor , and ' tweak ' them tight once back on the floor after you finish , i leave my breaker bar in the way so to remind me to do this , its always the last tool back in the box

good luck

Gentlemen
this information is exactly what I was looking for. I will do as described and hope to get all my stuff done before the weather will be good for racing it on German Highways again.

Hi folks,
I am trying to jack up the car to underseal it, and would be obliged if someone could clarify a couple of points I have read on previous posts on the subject.

a) On my 2001 plate XK8 4 litre convertible, I noticed at the front end an aluminium beam behind the sump and a relatively thin cross piece in front of the sump. Which one should I use?

b) at the rear I found a crossmember with what looks like the base of the diff showing through it. do I jack up using this crossmember, and should I avoid the base of the diff?

Any pointers would be much appreciated
Peter F
