xk8 buying help.

Postby stratos » Tue Mar 24, 2009 1:44 am

Hello everyone.
I am looking around for an xk8 could members here leave a list of trouble things to look out for. I love these cars but I would be interested to hear the bad as I go forth to find one. I have 2 older xj6's and these have served me well. But this will require a bit more nerve as there is more cash involved. I will be looking at early cars 96 -7 and high milers. Any help gents would be appreciated. At this level seeking jaguar expertise is out of the question.

What I would really love is a buying checklist or maybe I could compile one from here. weird being in a 2 door forum hmmmm.

Thanks.
Paul.

Have a read of the articles previously posted regarding car purchase (scroll down the BB list).

In addition to that I could not say enough about the value of travelling to one of the XK8 seminars. I attended the last one in December which was presented by David Marks. The range of topics covered (known faults on XK8 etc) and general tips on buying was excellent and a good day out too. In addition, Bleasie & Co all had their cars lined up for the 'sound test' of their Paramount and JEC exhausts .
As an XJ40 driver planning on making the move to XK8 Conv motoring, this provided great assurance that the move can be done with peace of mind - once you do the research, know the importance of service history and have the car checked. Your are then in a position to drive a bargain.

If you witness 50 XK8 driving out the gate at Castle Bromwich as I did, then there won't be any going back to XK6's!!! Good Luck.

Hi Both

I think, other than ensuring that the engine is sound (nikasil and tensioners "issues") the rest of the car is pretty much standard in terms of what you check when buying used.

There are a few buyers checklists around the web - but to be honest, if you need one, take a friend!

As has been said, its a cracking car and one you will no doubt enjoy fettling as ownership progresses.

I can recommend Nigel Thorley's book "You and your XK8" which is published by Haynes and available from JEC Direct.
All the info available on the Forums (and then some) in one place, plus some good pre purchase advice.
A good read as well !

Guys

I did a quick write up on the subject of rust on the XK - might be worth a read before you go looking to buy.

Its over on MPC:
