Hi Peter I felt the same as you after reading all the posts and the nasty things that happened to people that had wished they had had theres done , so that promted me to get the top ones done, i also had a new uptodate water pump and a new stat, the total cost by an independant jag specialist was £580inc vat the car was picked up from my home and del back all included, so now i give it a bit of welly with out the nagging what if???? and then your looking at £4000 plus for the repair
idealy i would have liked all the tensioners done with new chains, but it was just before the holls touring devon and cornwall for 2 weeks so i went for the main probs the guy at the garage told me they perhaps would have lasted abot a couple of weeks or so and if i had have gone touring with them like it it certainlly would have blown up, so i had a lucky escape,
so if you can afford it my advice is get them done put it on the credit card and pay it off later at least you will have peace of mind
I wonder if you have ever had a blowby test done as well i had one done by my jag dealer the result was 16 so all is well with the nickasil bores.
my next thing i am going to have done are all the original wheels are to be refurbished i can get them done for £35, each i want to keep my car as original as possible as it came out of browns lane

Out of interest how much did the job cost? - did you just have the top tensioners replaced ?
My XK8 (97 ) has completed 70k miles and I am getting nervous!!
Peter
Peter, I had mine done (MY2000) at 59K miles by David Marks, Nottingham. That is the secondary chain tensioners (or top ones as you say). The cost including all parts and labout was £350 and took about 3 hours.
Again, mine was preventative action rather than a problem and mine also had started to split down the shaft (not nearly as bad as Micks though).
I was really pleased that I had them done -peace of mind
My chains were in excellent condition so we decided to leave the chains and primary tensioners for a while (maybe 80-90Kmiles).
To do a full replacement of all tensioners and chains you would be looking at around £1100 - £1200 at most Independants.
