window problem
Moderators:MarkX, mike020150
My 1996 xk8 has a passenger window problem. The window will not drop when you want to open the passenger door. The only way to be able to open the door is to have the key in the ignition at no. 2, drop the window down, open the door, get in, then close the door and close the window. Any ideas what the problem is please.
Re: window problem
Hi Linda, it sounds like (for starters at least) you need to reset the window memory, the procedure for which should be in your handbook. In brief, the process is as follows; with the door shut, lower the window to its lowest position and keep the switch pressed until you hear a click. Then, raise the window to its highest position, again keeping the switch pressed until you hear a click. That should set the window memory limits enabling the window drop to operate correctly.
Things that can cause the window to lose its memory settings are generally related to a poor battery, do you know the age of the battery in your car? We generally recommend that the battery be changed at 5 years of age, regardless of whether it still cranks and starts the car.
Alternatively, it may be that your glass alignment has shifted and you will need to have the alignment corrected - a lengthy process that was fully detailed in the Jaguar Enthusiast magazine column, December 2022.
Hope this helps.

Re: window problem
Hi Jim, thanks for the reply, yes I have reset the window quite a few times and that still is not working, the battery is 2 yrs old and yes know that one a Davide Marks told me about that a few years ago. I can seem to get it back in sync and then when I go back to it it is out of sync again. Think I will just not have a passenger in it and not open the passenger door...... Thank you. L
Re: window problem
Hi Linda
Another common problem with the XK8/R is a micro switch in the door lock. This could be the cause the problem you have.
If, having re-set the window program, you are still having the trouble on the same door them the micro switch is most likely to be the issue.
Note. When the microswitch failed on the drivers door to my MY 2003 XK8 a number of years ago, the independent mechanic told me that not all XK8/R doors have locks that Jaguar supply spare micro switches for. I assume that means it's more difficult to source & replace.
Good luck

Re: window problem
Thank you, that does seem like the most likely problem. Oh well, no passengers for a while, so will try to track one down. Thanks again L
