ABS -Traction control & Stability Control

Hi All, I have a 98 x100 XKR, my ABS light has come on and the messages on the dash says traction control fail and stability control fail, the car has done 62k and is not driven as much as I would like, hope someone can help. Regards Phil

If you are not using the car very much it could be a battery problem. These cars are incredibly sensitive to voltage drop.

Mmm. Not much information to go on there Phil! Without getting into a guessing game that might or might not get you anywhere and might be money wasted, there are some easy checks that might prove lucky.

First, ensure your battery is in good condition, particularly as you don't drive it often. My own car briefly flashes the message DSC System Fault as the first indication that my battery has got a bit low! Chasing problems while the battery is below par will often end in failure!

Then, fuses; In the engine compartment fuse box, check F4, 5A, F16, 30A and F18, 30A.

Check the multi-pin connector at the ABS pump for corrosion or damage.

Next check is of the cleanliness of each wheel speed sensor. If you can, remove each one in turn to do this and also clean the toothed wheel that the sensor almost touches when fitted. While you're at it check the electrical connector for each sensor for corrosion of any pins. If you have a meter, check the resistance of each sensor; each should be 1100 ohms + or - 60 ohms.

Depending on how those checks work out, the next stage maybe to get the fault codes read to pin-point the fault more accurately. A cheap generic scanner is unlikely to read ABS fault codes, so this might be the first point of financial outlay. Let's try not to go there!!

As Richard has said, it may be a battery problem, but on the other hand, it may be a wheel speed sensor or a sensor harness. However, when mine displayed these messages, it turned out to be a problem with the ABS module, which I had repaired/resoldered. A cheapie code reader probably won't identify the problem. To definitively diagnose the problem, a professional code reader would have to be plugged in.

Hi All, thank you for all the info, the battery is less than 6 months old, have taken the car to AA Restorations just outside Spalding they have done work on the car before and they have always been excellent in the past. Hi All. Thank you again for the info, passed it all on to Jeff at A A Retorations which he found helpful, the problem was the abs module which Jeff re-solded and a wheel sensor which was replaced, Jeff checked the other sensors and apart from being ceased in we're all working fine. ( genuine one is £110 ) wasn't sure about aftermarket ones so went for the genuine one. Really impressed with the service, they kept me informed and it was done in 3days at a very reasonable price. Had a look around the workshop while I was there and they do all types of restoratiions I spotted a Gordo Keeble, Elan S3, 4 Evantes, Healy 104,Mimi Pickup and others with covers on.
