MPG for an XKR

Postby MarkGeorge » Fri Feb 22, 2008 11:59 pm

I have a 2000 MY XKR with 49k on the clock, which is returning about 14-15 MPG around town and 21-22 MPG on a motorway when driving at a steady 70, is this typical? My friend who owns a 2001 XJR gets 20 and 28 MPG in the same regimes, which makes mine seam heavy on the juice! I drive my car smothly and seldom use the sports mode, indeed If I drive the car moderatly hard the MPG drops even lower....!

I never thought about the consumption until my friend asked waht mine did, do I have a problem or is my car typical?

Are you comparing like with like, ie both brimming the tank each time and working out mpg from distance recorded or, alternatively, relying on what the car's read-out tells you - or are you using the former system and your friend the latter?

We have measured it both ways, so no calibration errors here, what do other members get out of the XKR?

Your XKR does sound a little greedy, not a lot, just as if it's slightly off song. 22/23mpg is a more typical figure on runs. Unfortunately, the XKR is a complicated beast and the cause could be as simple as needing a new air filter or plugs. Even low tyre pressures could have this much effect. Alternatively, it could be a case of a disconnected or failing sensor, like the air temperature or lambda sensors, things which can only really be diagnosed using the Jaguar or Autologic computer systems. Finally, be wary of all car to car comparisons, small differences in gearing caused by different tyres as well as axle ratios give different mileages for the same journeys! Mike.

Mike, thank you for your input, I have the tyres at the hard end of the scale, but do think that the car maybe a little off it best.

Mark.

Just out of interest in February this year I completed around 2,300 miles to the South of France and back in my XKR, and had a read out of 26.9 MPG. The large majority was clearly on the motorways where I did clock up 3 figs with the cruise control on, but quite a bit was just around the village where we have a house, local shopping etc. I need to reset the trip read out to see what I am getting around town without the motorways.

26.9mpg from an XKR!

I'm only getting 23.0mpg from my XK8 although it is very mixed motoring between urban and motorway (and the urban includes loads of putting jumped-up chavs in 'sporty' Renault Clios, etc in their place as they try to race away from traffic lights!)

Going to have to pay for cosmetic surgery as the g-force is definitely stretching my skin!

Hello Mark et al,

On my last 3000 Km round trip to the South of France, my XK8 averaged 29.8 mpg. Mostly motorways with dawdling around villages mixed in.

Hi XKR owners,

My car is XKR 2004/5 convertible with 28000 miles last serviced August 2007.

I went to Kendal two weeks ago on mostly motorway 320 miles each way, and my MPG was 30.7 north and 30.2 south with average speed of 50mph. Each way I had a 20 minute holdup of going very slow. I did use higher octane petrol for this trip.

I use my cruise control whenever possible.

Running around with little motorway my normal mpg is 23 - 26 at 27/28 mph using normal grade Shell mostly but also Esso and BP when the price is right.

over a 10000 mile I was 23.5 combined 50% motorways with average speed 35 mph.

My manual says 30.7 extra urban and combined 22.6 mpg

It does all depend on your driving and I would say I have a light right foot but do have the occasional burst of speed.

Hi Mark,

My Y Reg XJR returns 23mpg while my R Reg XKR returns 20mpg.
This is based on my daily 100+ mile round trip to Aberdeen and on over
10,000 miles in both vehicles.

So yes XKR's are thirsty.

Regards,

Twiceam

My XKR is also a 2000MY with 57,000 miles.

Around town - 14-16 mpg, on a run about 24-28.

I only use Shell V-Power and it is sound in wind and limb, being looked after jointly by Racing Green Cars and Bob Bates (JEC Technical Advisor).

So your car sounds not too far off, IMHO

Remember that our cars have a 5 speed box, whilst later cars have an additional gear.
