Hi, I bought my XK8 last October ( a late 1997 with 75K on the clock) and took out breakdown cover with Autopromotions, as suggested by the car dealer ( please note the term "car dealer"). The car is great but the more I find out about its history, the more worried I am. I have just had the water pump replaced as it failed and I thought I was lucky to get away with less than £200 inc VAT. My last Jaguar was an XJ8 3.2 which after 12,000 miles and 13 month, so the cover expired, one of the top cam chains also expired at a cost of £3500 and unfortunatly I lost all interest in the car so I PX it back to the dealer and took the XK8.
Thats the history.
Going forward, the car is running great and is due for it's next service in 2500 miles ( 90K) which falls into line with the MOT and the end of breakdown cover. I have been quoted £900 plus VAT to have the new metal tensioners and chains fitted when they are doing the service plus the cost of the service and MOT.
My question is, as the cam chans and tensioners are a "know problem" with the V8 if they go ( and cause collateral damage) will they be covered on the policy?
If I keep the car I will be taking the clubs, Footman James, breakdown cover but I'm not sure if that would pay out for a known fault.
Many thanks
Richard.
ps. is the auto dipping interior mirror in and XJ8 the same as an XK8 ? there are lots of XJ8 ones available at reasonable prices but as soon as you say XK8 the price doubles.

Hi Richard I think myself a lot of these so called warrentes are not all as they seem after reading a lot of posts on another website of the xk8/r club it seems the only ones that cover such things are the jaguar ones at a cost of around £1500 plus and even they do not cover loads of things
like bushes and suspension as lots are classed as wear and tear
on the other point regarding the chain tensioners i had mine done on my 98 xk just the top tensioners and the water pump and stat at a cost of £580.00 it is not nessesary to replace the chains unless the tensioners have gone down to the metal so wearing the chains, anyway the chains are 1 piece and need to have the bottom cogs removed so normally all the tensioners are relaced as with the chains around £1500, I have heard of firms replacing the chains without the bottom cogs off by using a link in the chain just like the old bike chains i for one would not accept that as a repair to such a super car, The 90,000 service is a biggy and the plugs will have to be replaced plus al the other things so its not cheap i have been quoted around £550.00 plus vat
About the mirror i had a 98 xj8 and the mirror looked the same to me
have a look on jagspares on ebay theres always loads of spares on there.
I run an Stype as well 2000x 3.0se i have spent around £1500 on the suspension all known faults and classed as wear and tear so much for a 12 months warrenty from the dealer ????

I have just replaced my XK8 electrochromic interior mirror with one from an XJ8, make sure the connection plug is the same type size and colour as there are at least four plug and socket combinations that I know of and whilst it is easy to remove the wires from one plug to the other they also have different colour coding on wires and positions on the plugs!!
As a by the way, I don't know what the liquid is inside the mirror but trust me it is corrosive to plastic and rubber and when it drips down it lands on the centre console and Jgate and splashes the radio and facia. I had to replace several componants as well as the mirror, including the Jgate illumination module, you can't buy just the plastic marked cover, due to the damage. The cost if I had used new parts would have been over £750. I would advise anyone with these types of mirror to place some protection beneath the mirror when not in use, but then its up to you!

.
Just bought my XK8 a couple of weeks ago and the standard warranty excluded timing chain tensioners, so I went for their Gold one which does cover them and water pump, with a claim limit of £5,000 in one claim and 2 years cover it seemed a good deal for an extra £710 ..but only time will tell really

Bassman, you did not say who the cover was from? is it Jaguar based cover?
The " mechanical breakdown insurance" I have is with Autopromotions and is does cover the timing chains and tensioners but unfortunatly there is a clause which states that the car must be serviced every six months or 6000 miles, where as Jaguar are happy for the car to be serviced every 10,000 miles. I have been working towards getting the mileage and service record back into line so it is 7500 miles from the last service so the insurance is a waste of time for me.
I think I will write to the club mag. and ask the question to see if the clubs cover is worth paying for.
I'm not sure if this is your first Jag of if you have been lucky enough to have been driving them for years, if it's your first, enjoy it, they are great.

Hi Richard
It's Premier Plus through Auto Protect(Hitachi Capital Insurance Europe) I took it out when I bought the car from Arun. It also says 6 months /6,000 miles but also says or in line with the manufacturers recommendations
Yes it is my first Jag after a lifetime of lust
been driving for 33 years and just managed to afford one/have the bottle to buy one
did look at XJ coupe's a few years ago but all I saw was rubbish and bottled out
