Elusive scuttle rattle in convertibles.

Rattles are notoriously difficult to trace. However, one possibility in convertibles at fault, emanates from the scuttle braces. Braces are held in place by a torx screw (T40 before VIN 020871; T50 from VIN 020871) at one end and a suspension strut mounting at the other end. After releasing the strut, check that the threads of the fixings are undamaged. Discard the strut mounting nut. Reposition the brace. Fit a new nut (M8 13mm a/f, part no JFX 10805B) and tighten lightly. Apply locking compound to the threads of the torx screw; refit the screw and torque it to: T40 - 22/28Nm; T50 - 40/54Nm. Complete the tightening of the strut nut to 26/34Nm. Allow the locking compound to cure before testing the car for rattles.
