Hello all,
I've been a JEC member for 11 years and sold my E-Type in December as I could no longer justify keeping it due to lack of use. Just sat in the garage month after month and concerned that by the time I have the time to enjoy it again (kids, work) it will need another rebuild!
Anyway, couldn't go on without a Jag, so bought very cheap 1997 XK8 in ice blue (always loved this colour) with a good history, rebuilt gearbox and steel linered replacement engine.
First big job was to replace the top tensioners, check the waterpump (latest version fitted), replace the thermostat and service with 5/30 oil. Also checkd wheel bearings and body for corrosion. Front footwells have been done already and looks to be a good job. Found surface corrosion in several places underneath and some on the sill ends, so still have that to sort out properly.
Also had bad corrosion on the rear wings a few inches forward of the seam below the boot lid. Terrible mud trap and on removing the paint I found holes (ouch). Spent a few days repairing this as best I could and have just sprayed using pro supplied acrylic base coat and 2k top coat. Have yet to remove the masking paper to check the match!!
Now nervous about the bottom tensioners (nice and quiet but too many horror stories) so thinking of doing the whole lot but scared of trying to release the crank pulley bolt at 370nm.
Also seems that the gearbox (6000 miles) is filled with Dexron 111 and not the correct Esso fluid, so will need to get that flushed throguh and replaced.
Now, what was I saying about lack of time?
More soon no doubt.
Mike
