Dodgy sender unit 51 plate XKR

Postby teknimart409 » Sat Jul 23, 2022 10:45 am

Hi
Any one changed a fuel sender unit on one of these. I have been told it is possible to change it through the subwoofer hole but I can't find any videos on this.
Also, do I need to change the access plate and seal?
The gauge only goes up to halfway when the tank is full, just bought the car and the guy I bought it off supplied the sender
Fabulous car with just a few issues

Some more details are needed to give a definite answer s the fuel sender position changed around the time you XKR may have been built.

I believe the position changed after VIN A11050 from being in the rear face of the fuel tank, where it was easily replaced, to being integral with the fuel pump assembly.

So for earlier models, remove the carpet liner between the boot and the fuel tank, disconnect the two wires and unscrew the securing ring holding the sensor in place. Use a new seal on re-assembly.

Later models with the integral fuel pump and level sensor have slightly different arrangements according to year, but removal/replacement is essentially the same for them all. Although Jaguar's directions require the fuel tank to be removed, for coupes with a sub woofer (or an opening for one) in the parcel shelf, that provides a simpler access route. Different owners take more or less short cuts! It seems that most who use the sub woofer hole also disconnect the under car fuel lines to the tank before sliding the tank rearwards a little. Others find they can move the tank far enough without those disconnections, merely disconnecting pipework as necessary within the boot.

Mine has the access from the top through the subwoofer hole but with a little access from the back.
Am I right that it doesn't matter how much juice is in it?
I'm going to leave it 'til next week when I have a new seal, I'll let you know how I get on
Many Thanks

As long as it's not brim full I don't think the fuel level would get in the way, but less would be better than more as you're going to have to manoeuvre the tank around a bit!

Safety points to bear in mind; as you're going to be disconnecting and then re-connecting wiring (that shouldn't have any volts present anyway if ignition is off) it would still be advisable to disconnect the battery after opening the driver's door. You MUST do this BEFORE starting work on the pump assembly to avoid a spark when petrol vapour is around. Similarly, do not re-connect before all is sealed up again and the boot and surrounding area are well ventilated. I'd have a fire extinguisher to hand anyway. I'd also avoid switching any mains powered equipment. Even light switches can spark. :(

(Sorry if that's all obvious, but others coming later may not know.)

Hopefully you'll post an account of the job here with photos, or even better send the account to Jim Mann for inclusion in the magazine :D

Hi
Still haven't fixed the problem and so far shied away from removing the tank. Despite other advice, access through the subwoofer hole is impossible, I have tried it, don't go there.
I need a little advice on this before i take further action. I have drained the tank when the gauge shows empty and drew 32Litres out
The problem is that when the gauge shows empty, the car behaves as if it is running out of fuel.
Is there a mechanism that make the car think it is running low from the gauge even though the tank is still half full?
I have also been told that the fuel lines filter etc. are situated behind the nearside front wheel arch is this correct?
I am beginning to suspect this isn't a sender issue.

If you want to do some checks on the fuel level system, Jaguar laid out a method and advice way back in 1996 in this TSB for the then 4 litre saloons, but it should still work for the X100. I can't say if the fuel quantities given are exactly correct for the X100, but the process should be OK.

The X type diesels (and maybe other diesels?) do have a programmed stutter on low fuel, but I don't think there is any direct connection between low fuel level and engine performance other than just running out of fuel for the X100.

The fuel filter is positioned on the lefthand side of the car, underneath the rear seat pan,
