Hello everyone

Postby xk8mk2Craig » Fri Dec 27, 2013 2:37 pm

Hi I am not new to classic cars or Jags but new to the club. I have purchased my dads 3.4 Mk2 Jag off him and have just purchased a 1997 Xk8 convertible. mid life crisis- no it was just my 40th Birthday present to myself!!!
I havent used my xk8 much yet as its got a little rattle at the front. Going to get the timing chains and tensioners inspected by my local jaguar specialist ( Nene Jags at Peterborough) before i go to far in it!!! Craig

welcome

i sold my 8 a few years back , but it was a saloon car ,

another thing to check is the water pump , and thermostat, and also the coolant tower in the front of the engine, these are cheap to buy and replace at the moment, so its a no brainer for preventative work

check the induction pipes for splits, and the full and part load breather pipes, these will throw out your CO readings, etc,

the VVT on these cars can rattle at startup , usually because of the wrong oil in the engine, i would suggest a full oil change and new genuine Jag filter , semi synthetic is fine, fully syth is a waste of money.......

most of all,

enjoy

oh, and its the law round here, ...........we need pictures, lol

Thanks Brake buster

I have had it inspected and serviced, so it has had oil change. I have also bought a new thermostat and housing for it ( yet to arrive). If the timing chain and/or tensioners do need replacing then is it best to do the water pump at the same time ( is it less labour?)

I dont think it the tick/rattle is from the timing chain area. I think its coming from one of pulley on auxillary drive belt, but there is also a tick occasionally from engine area.

Best to get the tensioners looked at though to have peace of mind!!

the serpentine belt should be replaced by 80k miles, even though Jag say every 100k , this should be done along with the automatic tensioner for the belt, and also possibly the two rollers for the belt , ablaut £100 worth of bits ,
