Another XKR in Aberdeen

Postby Jonathan3004 » Tue Sep 09, 2008 10:41 pm

Hi Just joined having bought my MY2003 4.2 XKR in January this year with 85k miles. Previously owned a 2003 X type 2.1 petrol which was great and never needed any work other than annual service.

Really like the XKR but have had serious issues! In the last 7 months I have had:

new throttle body
new gearbox (yes gearbox!)
2 new door seals
8 ignition coils
8 spark plugs
2 rear bumber mounts
Various rear suspension parts
2 rear tyres

Thankfully the first 3 items where covered by the dealer who sold me the car which is probably £7k worth, I have paid the rest c£900, so all and all not too bad (please remember I am from Scotland!).

I have also bought the Autoenginuity software with the Jaguar upgrade tool which was £340. This has been interesting but the level of information is beyond my current understanding, but I am keen to learn.

If anyone is near Aberdeen and wants to use it, please let me know (no charge!!)?

Currently the engine light is on and I am getting periods of restricted performance. The fault codes are P0171 & P0141 which means the fuel mix is lean. So I either have too much air or lack of fuel in the mix. I feel that it is the latter.

The pattern is start the car, drive a short distence, the restricted performance comes on then c5-10 mins later it clears and the car is usually fine for the rest of that journey. If I stop at traffic lights whilst the restricted performance (RP) is still on, put the car in netural and feather the throttle it sometimes clears. But in any case if a turn the engine off and then start it again the same pattern occurs....

Also when the car is running without RP the car hesitates when accelerating.

The local dealer has had the car a couple of times but thus far been unable to fix it, it is going back in on Thursday!

If anyone has any ideas or has seen this before can you please let me know??

I am looking forward to meeting fellow jag owners and hope that my car is running well soon!

All the best

Jon

hi I have just got my 2001 XKR thankfully no real issues apart from one new rear tyre punchtured £250 sheets + fit. Car has 20" paris alloys, and the service, which for 60K miles cost a bomb went to Jaguar in the Aberdeen for it thought it best but £1100 quid jeeze!! for full service with new super charger and alternator belts plugs and all fluids, wont be back there for a while.

Where did you ge the car sounds a lot of faults for a 2003 model,
whats the software you have.

may be see you around in Aberdeen mines a silver XKR brought it down in englandshire 4 weeks ago.

Got a good one, fingers crossed, the jag garage said it was in very good condition and has had a lot done. Had an AA inspecton which was money well spent, had been looking for ages for one got it from the jaguar mag a mate passed it no to me.

Need to get into looking after it myself after the jag garage bill

Just need to sort the wheels refurb and a few stone ships to the front

Hope to get it really polished up for next summer Drums castle jag day

Good luck sorting your problems, press the dealer to sort it for you.

Best wishes

Graham

Graham

I bought it from Stratstone in Cardiff. Like you I had been looking for a while and saw this one. I thought that I was doing well going for the 4.2 which didn't have the nickisil or timing belt issues and the gearbow was said to be better!! It had one previous owner (who I contacted) and full service history from the main dealer. The milage was high at 85k but for the age of car and history I thought it should be fine.....

My tyres I got from the web and they were c£120 cheaper for the two than kwik fit would have been (I paid £330 for both, only 18") and I got then fitted for £8 each from Charles Leslie in Edzell. The 80k service which includes the belts was done by a specialist garage in Cardiff for £330.

I wish that I had gone for an inspection, but reckon that all things considered the garage has been good in picking up most of the big items, just annoyed that there has been so many issues. I now drive it looking for faults and wondering what will go wrong next !!!

Stratstone in Aberdeen have had the car today and I should get it back tomorrow, they think it is an air leak somewhere but they havn't found it yet!

The software is called Autoenginuity (see http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_AUTOPCU.html ) it allows you to see all the fault codes in your car, check various sensors and switch off the engine fault light. It also has a feature to test BHP output and 0-60 time etc.

I also have the workshop manual which contains a lot of information. You can save a lot of money and at least see what the issues are even if you do end up having to take it to the dealer. This includes the service shedule, I can give you a copy (by email), your supercharger belts should only need doing every 40k miles so strange that yours were needing done, the other belt only every 100k miles. The only unusual thing at 60k miles is a new fuel filter, so check your invoice for that.

I stay on Forbesfield Road off Great Western road. If you want to pop round I will show you how the software works. Drop me an email and I will give you my phone number (email jonathan3004@hotmail.co.uk).

Good luck with the car and I hope to see you soon.

Regards

Jonathan

Update

The Jaguar dealer has had the car for the last two days and cant find the problem! They have checked the fuel pressure, fuel filter, injectors, change the MAF checked for air leaks everywhere and checked all the wiring and come up with nothing. They have emailed Jaguar for help and are awaiting a reply. I have to take the car back on Monday when their head machanic will have returned from holiday so he can have a look. So any further suggestions are welcome but this is proving difficult!

Thanks

Hi, You've certainly been unlucky so far. XK8s/Rs are complicated beasts so you're going the right way by buying the diagnostic software but interpretation of the results only comes with experience. Your dealer is listing the obvious answers to the car's symptoms. Hopefully, Jaguar's own technician with his wider experience will come up with the correct interpretation and answers. Good luck! Keep us all posted. Mike.

The car is fixed now, the main dealer replaced the fuel filter, the lambda sensors and thremostat. I have had the car back for a week and it seems to be fine now. I am hoping that this will be the end of my issues for a while!

Thanks
