Newbie XKR owner, newbie JEC member questions

Postby Malc_R » Mon Apr 28, 2008 10:41 pm

Hi - Just taken a 1999 XKR convertible. I have a couple of questions that I hope established members dont think too dumb...

1) I would like to get hold of a set of Detroit alloy rims - independent dealers tell me that I can source them, but when I ask if they have any its "the sucking sound" followed by "Yeah, you can get them but they are *really* hard to get hold of and *really* expensive - up to two thousand pounds"

Am I being groomed here for a sting, or are they really in such short supply ?
Where could you suggest I try , and how much should I expect to pay?

2) Tragically, my XKR is the only one I have seen so far (of about a dozen) where the paint on the supercharger intakes has partially flaked off. I know it doesnt detract from operations, but visually, it doesnt enhance the under-bonnet looks.

What options to I have here ? Should I take it all off and leave shiny aluminium-looking, or is it possible to have them repainted ? Vain, I know, but "the devil is in the detail" as they say.

TIA

Malc

Malc,

I don't think you are being set up for a sting. When I purchased my '02 XK8, it already had 20" Detroits fitted, but I was warned about how fragile they are, and the cost of replacements... £750 per wheel I was told!

Hi Malc ,
A really good source for wheels and tyres is Dave at High Profile Tyres on 07966 539197 , I personally know a number of people who have bought wheels and tyres off Dave , he gets some really super deals  , I bought a brand new set of 20" Sepangs from him a few weeks ago complete with 'J' rated Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres , wheel centres , the correct Jaguar "long nuts" , valve adaptors etc , Dave travelled from Coventry to East Yorkshire to fit them and they are brilliant , the Detroits that you are after will be very reasonably priced I'm sure . If you ring him tell him Nik from Beverley recommeded him , I'm sure he will look after you , With regards to the paint coming off your supercharger this is not an unusual problem , it can easily be removed , bead blasted , painted or polished ( or both if you wish ) with great effect :!: ,

Best Wishes ,

Nik
