5 Gallon Steel Jerrycans

It's illegal to fill these at a petrol station now according to the bitchy Sainsburys attendant who turned off the pump on me today.

Good enough for the Army all over the world since the last world war but not for me getting ten quids worth of Ethanol diluted dinasour juice for the lawn mower. She did offer to sell be a 5 litre plastic can, I told her where she could stuff it.

I know the hazards of storing petrol, I'm not stupid. This country is becoming a joke.

(Rant over  )

Our local ASDA will only allow you to fill 2 X 5 ltr plastic cans in 1 transaction. The pumps all have small signage on them stipulating this.

Yes I agree - still annoying!

When I was in Troon recently, my pals friend wanted some petrol for his Chevvy powered American V8 big block muscle power boat so on a trailer and towed by his 3.9 Range Rover, they set forth for the local Morrisons petrol station.

He tanked this waterborne ballistic missile to the brim and paid for it using a credit card. Some £600 worth of fuel dumped into the boat fuel tanks. Morrisons were pleased enough to accept that payment.

I stayed well clear of that boat. Carburetors and ancient steel fuel tanks. Rather a smelly old class racer. With a sound like thunder from the open exhaust this floating bomb set off for the Isle of Arun for pink gins and a lobster lunch. Glad I declined the offer of a trip around the bay.

I`d consider that boat far more of a hazard than a five gallon Jerry. Surely the fuel outlet should by the same token decline to sell fuel in such huge volume to rather a sad and neglected old powerboat. Whats the difference between the two or indeed a car. I fail to understand the logic.

Those of us with longer memories :-) will remember the fuel crisis in the eighties, when people started hoarding petrol in their garages. As a direct result of that, and perhaps an associated fire, the goverment introduced a ban on storing large quantities of petrol or storing it in non-approved containers. Given the way (a) all governments like to leap on bandwaggons, and (b) all governments are incapable of framing legislation without loopholes, I suspect you may be able to fill as many pit-bull terriers with petrol as you wish, as long as you don't store them near a badger set or on a flood plain. Simples.

'Elf and Safety, where would we be without it?
To be fair, most legislation is brought in because some dimwit (who should be removed from the gene pool) has already discovered the folly of doing something incorrectly and blown themselves up.
The fact that the rest of us have to suffer the consequences for these morons is unfortunate but unavoidable.
