Higher car tax - unavoidable?

How surprised should we be? Through his glove-puppet Darling, the hand behind this sneaky tax grab belongs to that unelected, cowardly, thieving, Scottish b&*"^*d that stopped the rolling 25 year road tax exemption on classics. The same man who of course who raided and continues to raid real working folk's pension funds, massively raised stamp duties, who sold the UK's gold reserves at the bottom of the market, and who has p&*!^d more of our money up against the wall than any half-witted socialist before him. A one way trip back over Hadrian's Wall with a boot up his a&*e would be my solution. Grrrrrr.

No, not really. I just filled up (my Discovery not my Jag) on the M4 with diesel and paid over £100 for the pleasure. That's the 1st £100+ tank I have ever bought and when I mentioned (forte voce) to the lady at the till that it was a rip off, and that what really got my goat was about £80 of it was going to Gordon for him to divide equally between corrupt lazy politicians, civil servants' salaries and their index-linked pension, and of course the terminally work-shy, the other 20 people in the BP shop all agreed strongly with me very vocally. A touching moment, but ultimately futile of course.
As well as my old XJS, I have a 2.7L diesel S Type which I bought new 3 years ago, and I was incensed by the recent underhand tax change as mentioned above, which penalises me retrospectively, so will watch this space with interest.

Contrary to what you read in the press the proposal was set out in the budget documents published in March. Typical of the press - they forgot to look at, and report on, the detail at the time.
Look at the tables on pgs 123 and 124 of this document http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/media/2/5 ... aptera.pdf which was published on budget day.
If like me your Jaguar is pre 2001 then your tax this year will be £185 and £200 in 2009/10. There is no proposal for what happens after that. So... I'm ok for two years but thats the one to watch.

For post 2001 cars the tax is based on CO2 emissions and could clobber you £400 this year, £440 next year and £455 in 2001/11

The people who really get stung are those that buy a new high emission car. The first year will cost £950 in 2010/11 but I suppose you could say if you are spending £50K car thats no big deal.

Dear All

In the midst of the current hysterical and non-objective climate (which apparently now is cooling down for the next ten years.......) I am doing all that I can to INCREASE my "Carbon Footprint" (whatever that is today), if my car had Carbs I'd richen them up a bit!...........and Bo+++cks to the lot of them

Delicately put D.H. you should realy now change your car colour from jet to carbon black.
On a slight tangent my wifes garden has a 300sq yards of grass four big trees and inumerable amounts of flora bushes etc no one in government has offered me any road tax rebate for this considerable carbon offset that must surely make my xjs carbon negetive as it does not do 3k per year.

Good point, having done the maths though you need to be growing about 3 large new conifers per year to be neutral!
3K miles at 30mpg (?) is 100 gallons or 454 litres, one litre makes approx 3 kg of CO2 which gives 1500kg of CO2 and about 400kg of carbon.
Based on photosynthasis (6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2) this needs half a ton of water and will result in 1023kg of new wood per year.
When can we visit your new forrest?
