What Sat Nav do you use?

"Continue North for six hundred and twenty two miles, then turn left"

Thats me navigating towards the Outer Hebrides by the way!

As my Navman 530 is dying, due to the battery not holding its charge anymore and that its often more lost then I am due to map updates being discontinued, I'm starting to look for a new GPS. It's mainly used for work, not necessarily in the Jag, so spot-on postcode navigation is essential.

I'm guessing many of us here use a sat-nav on a daily basis and I would value your opinion on how yours is performing. Not just the good points, but the bad ones also.

I've been very happy with my Garmin Nuvi. The maps are spot-on, and it can receive traffic updates via an FM transmitter and change route accordingly (with variable success if I'm being honest!).

although I dont use mine too much now, when I did the old TomTom got me from door to door 99% of the time, and even I found it easy to use.

Hi Pop
I use a Garmin Nuvi 360 which I bought two years ago. Fairly idiot proof and easy to use. I don't use it that much but its never sent me wrong. I love arguing with it though!
It took us 2500 miles around France and was invaluable.
I think I paid £399. Latest version is about £125. Doh!

Pop,

TomTom Navigator 6 running on my mobile phone. Never really had any problems with TomTom maps. The recalc of the route is very fast. My only difficulty is trying to get it to understand that it's easier to get to Birmingham from Kent by going clockwise around the M25 rather than anti-clockwise! But that seems to be a problem with every SatNav. I have the speed camera warnings installed & regularly updated. Have ability to navigate direct to Contacts that are stored on my phone, as well as ability to interrupt navigation to make / receive phonecalls handsfree. Also saves me having an additional device and mount in the car. Very cheap way of having quality SatNav system, assuming you've got appropriate phone - but then they give the phone away anyway, if you haven't already got a suitable one!

Paul

PS Just got this months mag today!!! Congrats on the article finally being published. Reads very well.

A bit off the point... but I was a passenger in a jaguar x-type recently. The built in satnav was awful. nothing was intuitive, the map was hard to decipher and the voice keps saying "turn left soon" which wasnt helpful in stop start traffic in the centre of Manchester. :x We gave up and used a satnav on a mobile phone which was much better.

One of my colleagues has named the satnav in his Land Rover Discovery "Becky", after his PA at work. This was on the basis that the satnav had a really sexy voice but, after a week, he realised that it wasn't quite as good at the job as he thought it was going to be.....

Hi
Tom Tom one with the full european maps, full postcode wherever used in europe, small lightweight and easy to move between cars. I've used mine on business in Finland and Denmark as well as the UK and its been faultless. For comparison I have an Alpine unit with touchscreen in one vehicle, it's really good but there is something about the Tom Tom's simplicity of use that appeals more. I also have a becker unit in the XJS which is not so good but fits the radio slot and shines the right shade of green. I like things to look neat and tidy which is why I have 'installed' systems in the vehicles.

Garman Nuvi 630 4" widescreen with built in speed camera function. bought it at the beginning of the year £139 and works a treat plus picks up all the speed cameras and sets of alarms when your driving over the speed limit. whether in a 20/30/40/70 mph area! The voice can get a bit weary sometimes but i don't use it on a daily basis

First i had a Tom Tom 501........now i have a Tom Tom 910 both top notch.
Post code navigation is great, it has loads of bits and bats that are really good over and above what you really need but personalise it and it becomes extra good........cameras standard, voices 39 of em to choose from (my own disc)
My pal has a Lexus with a satnav installed from new, an istruction book with over 90 pages in it.......understanding it is rather hard work....but he can find his way to the shops now..........

I use the A to Z manualy operated version. This has given years of trouble free use as long as you update the data base every ten years or so.

I used TomTom on my Dell PDA for 3 years and last year purchased a TomTom 510 after a week with a Road Angel (I was advised this was the greatest). Fortunately the company I bought the little angel from were happy to exchange it for a proper Satnav that didn't get confused like the angel did.
TomTom consistently gets top marks in T3 gadget mag and I'm certainly pleased with my years of experience with TomTom.

Nav Man and it's rubbish. Some Postcodes don't exist and some areas are incorrect. Eg Wallasey (near Liverpool) doesn't exist, all roads are under Birckenhead. It's rubbish and I won't be buying another Nav Man
