Dear All

I assume that it is the Forum server that has been wobbling (and BTW still is) for the last week or so???

The problem was not with the server, but the hosting company: Fasthosts.

You may have read or seen on the news that they were the subject of a hacking attack.

They informed webmasters some weeks ago, and suggested that certain passwords, protecting the storage of Credit Card information, should be changed.

This we did, for the main JEC site, which is the only site with an e-commerce activity.

Subsequently, Fasthosts suggested that ALL passwords should be changed and set out a timeframe in which that should happen.

I started to change all the other passwords (there are a number!), but was thwarted by a network problem with my Broadband provider: Tiscali, which denied me upload (FTP) access and the opportunity to make the necessary changes to all the other databases etc.

Then, Fasthosts decided, without notice, to reset all passwords, which had not been changed in the last month, including the ‘Control Panel’ passwords, which allow all others to be changed.

At that moment, all the external Forums’ BBs went off-line and there was no way to change things. We had to wait for our new ‘Control Panel’ passwords to be snail-mailed to us.

So, to the inevitable question: was your personal info at risk?

Fasthosts are confident that it was not, and I agree.
