I tried to start my Jaguar xjs the other day. The engine turns over but no ignition. One of the Ignition Coils was burned to a toast? I replaced both the Ignition Coils but no luck. I phoned around locally but nobody is interested in coming out. They all said that I must deliver my XJS to their garage. Most of the garages are too busy and not interested. I will need to hire someone with a flatbed truck as my xjs is automatic and can't be towed more than 30 meters. Has anyone else had these problems recently?

Hi Frank - you could join one of the breakdown services that offer home call out.
I'm with the RAC and have used Home Start a couple of times.
Just an idea!

Hi Frank.
I think that the limit for towing with an auto box is 30 miles, not 30 metres.
I guess the car is a V12 given that 'one' of the coils has burned out.
Where do you live, somebody local may be able to help.

Frank,
I'm sure with all the collective wisdom of our members, we can help you get to the bottom of the problem with some logical analysis.
Let me ask a few questions to start:
1. Was the car running well before the coil problem?
2. How did the coil problem manifest itself? You mention that "..one of the Ignition Coils was burned to a toast". Was does that mean? Was the car running and then cut out? Or did the car just not start one day? Was does "burned" mean? Was it visible externally, or did you just test and get no voltage output?
3. What coils have you fitted? Which Jaguar part number and who was the supplier?
4. Since replacing the coils, you've mentioned that you have "no ignition" when the engine is turning over. How are you testing that? Have you removed one or more plugs and got an absence of a spark when turning the engine over? Or are you just measuring zero voltage at coil output?
Cheers
Paul

Re: Jaguar xjs won't start
I thought that coils fail due to worn or bad spark plugs or ignition leads.
