i think i have some corrosion issues from standing for 12 years , even though the car was started regularly , the gearbox was never really works
so i think the bearings are flat spotted a i'm getting ' thumping ' under load , it can only be the gearbox as it does it in neutral and park as well as drive

Vince,
Could Bristol Transmissions rebuild the gearbox for you? Might be a good way out of the problem if they could.

i will give them a call , but i think any rebuild will be touching on a grand ?? unless others know different ,
a good used box will be around £200 plus fitting, which is fairly easy with a ramp and a tranny mount , and around three hours work

I think you could get it rebuilt for 500 tops, if the deal is you plonk down the removed gearbox at the rebuilders, and I do believe NOT rebuilding it would be a mistake - even if you have to wait for a bit to let the pocket money stack up. You have that LOVELY car, and if the box is coming out, then replacing it with a worn unit (however good) seems a shame. And in my own case, whenever I avoid/bodge/hope for the best, it ALWAYS comes back to haunt me! Also you can check the torque converter and replace that if needed;
Good luck and congrats on the car, and on the other most moving family things you mentioned. I am sure we are all full of admiration for all you have done in every field of your life.
