Experienced eye needed to inspect a prospectiveXJS purchase, Luton area

Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a 3.6 manual 1987 XJS near Luton. It will be my first classic car purchase, and I need someone to help me inspect it so I pay a fair price and don't end up with a lemon. It looks to be in decent condition with extensive documentation.

I've already paid an RAC inspector to have a look, but I would like a second opinion because he couldn't take the car for a test drive as there was a split hose in the water pump path. Also I'd value the input of a classic Jag specialist/owner instead of an RAC mechanic that spends most of his time looking at more modern vehicles.

The detailed RAC report PDF is available to anyone interested. A number of issues were flagged up, but I'm unsure about their true significance.

I'm happy to pay, of course, including travel expenses.

Hi Jeff. I often go back down the M1 past Luton on my way home on a Friday evening. I'd be happy to have a look with you.
As an alternative, there is an excellent buyers guide published by Veloce I think. Only costs about a tenner and packed with very useful information.
I'll see if I can find a link to it somewhere
