Exhaust/Overfueling??

Postby chris_wrj » Tue Mar 25, 2008 5:00 am

Bought my 1991 5.3 Auto couple of years ago. Recently had probs with loss of power and noticed drivers side downpipes glowing red,( I know probably cooked the cat) however want to replace them any way.
Would this just be an exhaust problem or something to do with electrics or ECU. Dont really want to take it to a main dealer yet if I can sort the problem myself but don't know where to start. HELP!!!!

If its glowing red the ignition is seriousely retarded, is it only the one bank?
Which type of ignition systems do you have?

Exhaust/Overfueling??

Sounds like the well known Marelli cap & rotor problem?
V12's aren't my best subject though.

Exhaust/Overfueling??

Chris,

Your car will have the Marelli ignition system. This uses an unusual distributor cap which effectively has two rows of contacts, one for each cylinder bank. This is mated to a twin rotor arm. As Pop say, they are prone to wear which often causes a problem with one bank of cylinders. Worth having a look at yours to see if there is any obvious problem with the rotor arm. Both the arms and the caps are available new from Jaguar.

Chris its not so much wear but tracking through the rotor arm that can cause failure of one bank let us know how you get on regards Kels

Thanks for all your suggestions will look into it and keep you posted. Quick question anyone recommend a particular exhaust system and whether I can remove the cats?
