Hello all
Can anyone advise a possible supplier for a new rad for a AJ16 engine celebration 4L. I don't like the quote given me by Dealer. Don't want to recondition current rad.
Its Friday night have drunk wine to forget grim week at work which has sapped any energy I had left to trawl through previous postings for clues.
On a completely unrelated note .Any tips on home brew. I seem to have produced paint stripper not a lively red with a delicate bouquet.
I will be at Stoneleigh on Sunday but suggest you give me a wide berth

Hi Milly
Sorry to depress you even further but I think you will be very lucky to get a NEW xjs rad off the shelf especially one for a particular model/year (apart from your main dealer). It just wouldn't pay to keep such items in stock in the hope that a customer might one day wander in. Unless that is somebody has been stuck with one that was ordered but not paid for etc. Having said that if you can source one anywhere Stoneleigh is the place to do it.......
Why don't you want to get yours overhauled?, bear in mind that unless you buy one from your dealer any "new" rad is likely to be someone elses old unit that has been re-cored. This will certainly be the best local option, try getting a quote from Serck Intertruck for starters, they're national and market leaders but won't be the cheapest.
Also if you get your old unit re-cored you can spec. a "tropical" core - much better cooling capability.
Hope this helps...
See you at Stoneleigh maybe.

Christine,
Drop me an email and tell me what sort of price you're being quoted for the radiator..
Alternatively pop over the XJS Forum stand at Stoneleigh and we can have a chat. We should be inside with the JEC Direct team.

Hello DH and Paul
Thanks for that. I guess I am coming round to the recon idea especially as you mention a "tropical core" option. Has anyone else had that done on a 4 ltre engine ?
The quote for a new rad is around £280
I will certainly be at Stoneleigh to pick up as much useful info as I can

I may be wide of the mark but my guess for a re-con unit would be about £175. (+VAT, exchange)
You should be able to get several quotes tomorrow but I would go to a reputable local firm, rads are heavy AND fragile so damage easilly and you don't really want to freight them

Hello
Back from Stonleigh where I spoke to a very nice man from Northants Autorads. He will collect the radiator from Guy Salmon ( they are working on the car this week) recon it and deliver it back for GS to refit. I asked him about the" tropical core" and he said they did those for the expats in middle eastern climates. The recons they do are to a spec that is highly efficient. He had a nice face so I think this was a genuine claim. Cost £165 plus vat

Well Done! Sounds like a result........price sounds OK, re tropical core, you should have explained how hot it gets in Northants. these days with Global Warming (in case he hadn't noticed)

Seriously, tropical cores are available for UK fitting and are a popular option.
Having said that assuming the rest of the cooling system is OK a new rad should be more than adequate.

BTW On that subject why dont you ask Guy Salmon if they will flush the system with cooling system flush before they take the old rad out. I've done this on V8 Rovers in the past prior to fitting a re-con rad and you'll be AMAZED at the crap that it will bring out of the whole engine cooling system

NB Did you drop in at The Forum stand today or were you hiding behind dark glasses and paracetamol?

Hello
Thanks for tips re flushing.
I skulked around the JEC stand a bit but didn't spot any XJS forum signs only people selling baseball caps and trinkets. Perhaps I was in the wrong place
I have to admit Saturday morning found me shoveling paracetamol down my throat but by this morning I was able to brave daylight without paramedics in attendance.
I did see a strange looking beast in the carpark under the hedge. It did have jaguar badges on it ( white and red) . It was a single seater and it was bolted together in panels and has leather straps . It was very curvy and navy with some white paintwork. I dont think it was a kit It looked as if it had some age . I think the number plate was SOM something .
What could it have been ?

No-one upset here
Forum stand was at the end on the right as you walked into the "Cars For Sale" Area, if you walked past you would have seen several blokes in various stages of hysterics at the sublime pleasures of owning an XJS.

Did I have leather straps ?
I hope you aren't confusing me with that lady in the JEC mag a wee while ago.
Dragging you back from your cynicism re Schumaker's last race -
Ive looked in my copy of jag file I think that car was a D type from around the 50's without the tailfin.
