Hello all,

My car is still running its original yellow fan which I know could disintegrate at any moment so one of the jobs while the car's off the road this winter is to replace it.

Here's a pic of it on the car:



Having checked David Manners, it appears that the part number is EAC9367:

Does that look to be the right part for my 89 3.6 manual?

I'm guessing that a reproduction part will be OK and not suffer the same issue as the original one - if you know of a better option please do let me know!

It seems the aftermarket ones vary in design, and I have read elsewhere of some not fitting correctly. It has reminded me that mine has the same defects, as does the spare one I have!

I fully accept that a rotating component that isn't in perfect condition should be replaced, however the only one I have heard of 'exploding' also had a siezed torquetrol (sp) unit. so suffered from overspeeding.

The other option is to go electric fan which apart from the engineering aspects is likely the better option for cooling, fuel economy and speed of engine warming. Plenty of V12s have gone this route, mainly to keep the thing from overheating.

Sadly I do know of a XJR-S that suffered catastrophic fan failure and I'm not sure it's turned a wheel since, so it does happen.

I don't fancy paying the £211 for a jaguar OEM part!

My fan isn't showing any sign of cracking, but I can only see one side of it so who knows? I'd like to find some way of strengthening it so that I can keep the engine pay looking correct, but short of dipping it in some sort of resin that seems unlikely!

Electric is an attractive prospect for the reasons you outlined, too. I'll think on!

If you check the Jaguar parts website, you'll see that the correct part for your car is EAC9657 not EBC 4553. I'd really suggest you always check the Jaguar parts website first to get the correct part number, not trust any other website.

I may be wrong but that pic of your fan SEEMS to indicate that the edge of the blades may have touched the top of the shroud? That's nearly always caused by a worn gearbox mount.

If the blades have touched the top of the shroud, you really need to change that fan, as it will have stressed the blades and their join point at the hub. I can't speak for the quality of the aftermarket fans but, if that's your only option, I'd still buy one form one of the reputable parts suppliers such as SNG or Manners.

I also think you may be right about the fan blades touching the radiator shroud - the gearstick does move more than other XJ-Ss that I've had and from the service history I can see that the gearbox mount has ever been replaced. Another little job for me! I don't think the original owner of the car really put his foot down so he was unlikely to raise the engine enough with the throttle.

I'll buy a replacement EAC9657 fan from Manners or SNG and replace it for peace of mind - and sort the gearbox mount as well!

I'm late to the party, but EBC4553 (for V12s) can be had from British Parts for £40.84 + vat and shipping). I purchased one for my '89 XJ-S V12 to replace cracking yellowed fan. The replacement was black and made in Italy: fitted fine and was in action at the recent JEC Castle Combe track day.
