The instruction to use Bars leaks has been in the manual since XK engine times.

I've used it (for 20+ years) on the aluminium/steel engines and not suffered any leaks (apart from 4 catastrophic kevlar hose failures - you'd think I'd learn quicker!) but some American users think it's the spawn of the devil.

US led bulletin boards are full of people telling each other that it's poison to cooling systems and anyone using it will suffer complete blockage and failure of their radiator. Like much else from that side of the Atlantic, this doesn't quite match UK experience. Although there's no doubt that the lower block area will have quite an amount of the granules present when examined during a block strip down. I am not sure how necessary it is on the AJ6/16 engines. Their production tolerances were rather better than the XK, and leaks less likely with less use of dissimilar metals.

Hi I think I have answered my own question when after two years of not using barrs leaks I noticed that the rubber seals on the water rail above the exhaust heat sheilds had started to weep and on adding barrs the leaks stopped.

Hi,

I added one bottle when I changed the coolant last month.

It cured a small weap from the hose to the gearbox (common issue).

Since then the temperature guage has been much more consistent, hovering around half way even with the air con engaged.

Took my 4.0 to Dave Marks a week back. Normally I do most of the work myself but I wanted to change gearbox fluid, rear axle oil, brake fluid and have someone other than me look at it before the Entente Cordiale.

All was going well until Richard noticed that the radiator was crumbling. A recored one was procured there and then and when Rob Middleton came to fill up after fitting it, he insisted on adding a sachet of Bars.

Interesting that a Jaguar trained specialist has no hesitation in using it.
