Rear Anti-Roll Bar

Postby Jon » Sat Apr 29, 2006 10:22 pm

I'm in the process of changing my rear radius arms (the old bushes are looking a little tired, and my car tends to pull a little one way on acceleration and the other way on braking, :? I suspect these as the cause). Rather than press out the old bushes, idle so-and-so that I am, I decided to buy a pair of new radius arms with bushes fitted, these are also uprated XJR-S parts (apparently).

Now, these new arms have the little mounts on which I understand are for a rear anti-roll bar, and I've read in Kirby Palm's 'book' that fitment of an early rear anti-roll bar is beneficial on non-sports pack cars such as mine.

I've found a couple of studs on both sides of the underbody, so I assume these are where the ARB mounts?? (picture follows, excuse the rust :) )

It does rather beg the question though that if they helped the handling, why did Jaguar drop them? There is mention in the 'book' that while the ARB helps the handling, it reduces the understeer tendancy that is considered 'safe'?

Has anyone had any experience of fiddling with the anti roll bars on the XJ-S?

Thankyou Please

Sorry, can't help with the rest of your questions but I can tell you how to identify the XJR-S parts - it was covered by David Marks in the XJ-S lectures in 2005.

On the standard radius arms, the big bush that is on the end nearest to the wheel has holes front and back. On the XJR-S version the holes are side to side.

Hope that makes sense, if not I'll post a photo...

Yep, the holes are side to side on the new arms. I knew that one. I wonder whether they're different bushes, or just pressed in at a different angle? 8)

As far as D. Marks said, they were the same bushes but at a different angle.

Anyway, my car has the rear ARB so if you can't get the answers you need I'll try and take a few pics for you - it's abit of a pain in the arse getting under it though...

The rear ARB was re-introduced to the 3.6 in Sept '87 at VIN 139052 as part of the sportspack option, it sounds like Jon's car was built just before the changes were introduced.
There were also quite a few changes to many of the suspension components at the front and rear at the same time as part of the 'package' so I don't know what, if any, difference adding just a rear ARB alone will make.

It surprised me to find that rear ARBs were never fitted to the XJR-S cars especially as the larger rear tyres make the back end higher than the front. Not having one does make the car feel very different when sprinting out of corners or roundabouts. I do get a bit more body roll. SimonR's ARB equipped car feels much more stable than mine when doing this. Mind you, I recently found out that I don't have the correct TWR dampers on the back which may be contributing to it.
Cheers,
Glenn.

Apparently my car has got the sports pack fitted, but like Pop, I don't really know what else other than a rear ARB and limited slip diff this means.

Anyway, Jon, I had to take one of the rear wheels off my car this morning so took you a few photos. Click the thumbnails to get much larger hi-res versions:

Many thanks for that Simon, thats confirmed its arranged how I thought it would be. Now I just need to source the bits 8)
BTW, funky looking red shocks

AFAIK the sports pack consisted of,
bigger front ARB, Rear ARB re-introduced and bigger than before, harder springs and different shocks, different steering rack, lattice wheels with 235/60 tyres, different seats and steering wheel. I think all 3.6's after a certain VIN carried the sports pack.

I'm not aware of any changes to the LSD though, as all XJS's have an LSD. Might have been though.

Just a side note, radius arms now renewed, car now seems more stable when 'gunning it' 8)

HI Simon,

Can I take you up on the offer of a few pictures of the Rear ARB Brackets fitted to the car. I'd like to see where there bolt up. Not even sure if you are still using the forum so if anyone else can help out, that would be great.

Some sports pack cars had the rear mounts for a ARB, but no actual ARB!!! My '89 was one such car. Fortunately - Harvey Bailey Eng. provide a decent aftermarket rear ARB. I also had a thicker front HB ARB fitted. Really transformed the handling.

Simon hasn't posted in nearly 9 years so I doubt he is still here, but hopefully someone else can help.
