Hi All
My car is currently in a garage having various suspension issues rectified - one of which is a very long lasting fault that has bugged me since I bought the car.
The car being in a garage has provided me with an opportunity to learn a bit more about the car - the suspension in particular - so that I go from 1% knowledge up to maybe 5%! I am still at the “what is this part called” stage - but I am getting there and understanding the car better and better is one of the true pleasures of ownership for me.
I have been looking at the SNG Barratt’s parts catalogue and noticed that the required part for the components of the Independent Front Suspension depend on what looks like a serial number:
However, the only number that I have seen on the independent front suspension on my car is as follows:
Clearly these two series of serial numbers do not tie up. Does anyone know where I can find a serial number that ties up to the series shown in the SNG Barratt parts catalogue - and even ow those relate to the serial number shown on the sticker on my car? I guess there is a similar story for the independent rear suspension?
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!
Peter

Hi Peter,
The jaguarlandroverclassic pages are likely the best reference for part numbers. For instance the C45711 part number as an example can be view as this:
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.co ... -seal.html
Click on Jaguar parts on their webpage and navigate to where you need to. Once you have identified the correct part number it is easier to google for the best supplier. Paul knows far more then me and will likely also offer help.

Hi PopRivet
As ever - thanks for engaging!
I have seem that website - but gave up on it because I couldn’t see a way to get from the purple numbers to a part description. I was using an iPad & Safari as a brower. Given that you directed me to that website as well, I knew that there must be value in it - so I went onto it using my laptop and Google Chrome as many browser - hey presto when I click on a purple number the parts descriptions all come up on the RHS. Thanks - that will help in future.
I am still confused by the fact that the suspension unit numbers in the SNG Barratt catalogue and the number shown on a sticker on the independent front suspension on my car do not seem to belong to the same sequence of references. Am I being ultra-dim?
As you say, David may well see this post and be able to shed some light on this.
As ever, thanks.

Re: Suspension - Serial Number for spare parts - confusion
Peter,
As Pop has referenced, irrespective of where you ultimately buy your parts, ALWAYS start with the Jaguar parts website. Despite one or two tiny errors, it is the only site that you can trust which will give you the right part numbers.
Also, there are 3 areas in the Jaguar parts website for XJSs, the early cars, the later HE cars, and then the facelift cars. So you can focus on teh right area for your own car. The reason that the SNG catalogue has confused you is that the 2W series cars are pre-VIN ie 1975 -1979 cars. I'm not sure which part you have photographed but that "Serial Number" isn't a Part number for that item.
Hope that helps,
Paul

Re: Suspension - Serial Number for spare parts - confusion
IIUC the missing bit of information is that the 2W... numbers in the SNG Barratt listing are the last component of the car's chassis number (what's now the VIN), and not a part number. Jaguar parts are usually described as fitting a range of VINs or chassis numbers; the part numbers are rarely on the parts themselves on older cars, except if someone left the sticky label on!
