have you checked the bars that go across the engine bay, at the top. If they are loose can cause mysterious Knock . regards Kels

First of all, thanks to everyone who has come up with suggestions as all the ideas will help others even though none so far have cured the noise in my particular case.
I *think* I have now found what the problem was.
I'll give it a week to make sure, and then report back.

I have indeed. On the 3.6, there is a steel pipe which vents the cooling system and is attached with two steel lugs to the radiator fan shroud. The lug brazing had failed on the L/H side. As there are cables attached to the pipe and it stayed in place, it was impossible to see that anything was wrong. I'm still amazed that just the pipe banging around could have made such a nasty noise!
For now, I've put some foam insulation around it, next time I replace the coolant I will braze the lug back on.

I now have a different knock from the front, this time I'm fairly certain its the lower suspension bushes. However, one thing leads to another and my list of works has grown to include dropping the sump to cure the oil leak, radiator rebuild to cure the water leak, replacing the A/C condensor (Very few fins left on it) and that's apart from whatever horrors await once the subframe is removed to reveal 21 years of use.
I had expected it to fail the MOT last month but to my surprise it passed without even a note of caution, but the upshot is that I will not be renewing the road tax in August and therefore taking it off the road.
As my resources have been limited for a while now, (I was credit-crunched 18 months ago and after a few temporary jobs I now find myself out of work again from the end of April),
I have sold my motorbike and bought a small car which will have to do for now.
I was tempted to take the £2000 government scrappage and get a new car, but I just couldn't do that to such a loyal and loved car like Rivet. Hopefully in the not to distant future I hope to be in a position to get it on the road again this time fully fit to take on some epic journeys once again.
I'm not leaving the site though, and as work progresses I will keep you all up to date.
So on your travels if you happen to see some sad middle aged chap staring longingly at your XJS through the windows of a Berlingo with a tear in his eye, give me a wave!
