bump stop issue

Hi all IM anew member so im unfamiliar with how this site works, i hope this post goes to the right place lol, iv recently changed the front subframe on my 1991 facelift but neglected to fit new bump stops, can these be fitted with the spring pans in place as they were a nightmare to fit and don't fancy taking them off again.

Hi there and welcome to the forum. I think I remember doing the same job on one of my cars and it was possible - just needed to jack the car up so the wheels hung down and spaced the springs out so there was more room between coils. However I may be recalling another car in my aged confusion! I'm sure others will reply too!

Welcome to the XJS section of the club Bulletin Board and congrats on your front subframe replacement!

I haven't replaced a front bump stops myself, but the service manual explains the process and how the bump stop can be fitted without removing the spring.

If you haven't got the parts and service manual, make it the first item on your shopping list. I wouldn't even consider running a car like the XJS without the workshop manual. They are only about £20-£25.

Hi David and Paul thanks for your replies. phew its a huge relief to know the spring pans may not have to come off, my heart sank when i realized i missed them out . Thanks for the congrats on changing the frame my wife doesn't understand the mission it was lol. With the exception of the bumpstops and a abs wheel speed sensor its complete. I hope you guys don't mind if i pick your brains for one more issue, my car is a 5 speed manual and even though it drove well i noticed the gearstick would bob up and down whilst driving over rough surfaces, i was thinkin whilst the cars on axle stands is there something that needs changing or is alittle movement normal?

The gearlever movement could be the the rear gearbox mount wearing which is something that can happen over time. It's a multi-piece item of spring, gasket and mount. Look in the parts manual (or jaguar parts website) for a detailed diagram.

It's worth examining as, if very worn, it can cause the engine fan to touch the top of the fan shroud as the whole engine and gearbox assembly pivots around the engine mounts. You would normally feel and hear a worn gearbox mount, rather than just see the gearlever moving. So next time you get under the car, have a look and gently lever around to see if there's any wear.

I agree with Paul - the first place I'd look is the gearbox mount. This is a spring around a "cotton reel" mount and quite often it has perished allowing excess movement. Not too hard to change so long as you have reasonable (and safe!) access under the car and a jack or similar to hold the weight of the gearbox as you dismantle the mount.

Thanks for your advice guys , i do recall a mount and suspected some sort of spring maybe above, if its as easy as supporting the gearbox and replacing it that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks again guys its been great talking to fellow enthusiasts,
