IRS Rebuild video.

Postby J44EAG » Mon Jul 19, 2010 8:26 pm

I found this clip of an IRS rebuild on the net.

I`m not sure which model this is but perhaps it is E-type rather than XJS.

The guy doing the job is obviously working in poor conditions. I cringed and nearly fell on the floor when he installed the first bearing with a cold chiesel. Surely he could have found a suitable piece of pipe as a drift. The man is a butcher fitting that bearing. Nuff said.

Here then is the link.

Definately a "How not to" video!

Hitting bearings is definately a no no, they can and do fracture shooting little bits of metal everywhere.

I also like holding the dial gauge dowm with gaffer tape - nice!

And pack the bearings with grease before fitting!

This video also shows why people put so much emphasis on service history - rightly so if this shows how some people do it.

A classic case of a little knowledge being dangerous...Well meaning but completely misguided in this case.

I cannot believe bearings were not force palm packed before assembly. The man relies on heat slightly melting grease enough to run into the rollers. He definately has had no formal engineering training.

The gaff tape could have be worse. It could have been Denso!

A bit of a technical horror!
