Hi all, was just wondering if anyone had any idea's on why I get a real bad smell coming from my air vents? It only does it when the cold or warm air is being sent into the car. All is fine when I have the aircon on. My car is a 1999 model. Any help would really be appreciated.
Many thanks.

Hello Dean.
Sounds like your air ducts need sanitising. There is, I recall a spray can fluid that can be administered via the cabin airflow filter holder. With luck that should kill the nasty pongs. Alternatively, some poor creature might have expired within the pipework.
Most S-type have a pollen filter which should be replaced at service intervals. I remember that wiper arms will need to be removed from the spindles. The plastic scuttle panel removed in front of the windscreen which then gives you access to the lift out filter. It is worth having a new filter to hand and high mileage filters can get very choked up. At that point you will be able to use the sanitising spray directly into the air intake.
The pong probably reduces due to the high volume of air passing through the system when the aircon is used. The staleness gets blown through faster. The routing of the refridgerated air may be slightly different also, with the offending smelly pipework being bypassed.
If a sanitisation spray does not work, then you might need an air con man. Most will have seen or smelt this problem before.
Perhaps you could let us all know how you cure the problem.
Hope this helps.
Mike
