Cabin Heater
Moderators:GJS-typeR, Montana5
My Cabin Heater has just failed on full heat, S-Type 2.7d 124,000 mls,MY 05, to be precise the passenger side is on full heat and not controllable, the drivers side is controllable but being overwhelmed by the passenger side. Has the Bye-pass water control valve, front offside location beneath the water bottle, failed. Coincidentally the heated water outlet pipe from the fuel fired heater corroded through in this area last summed. The heat at the CD player causes the player to trip but this could be consequential. Any suggestions ( I originally posted this in the XF section in error).

Re: Cabin Heater
Hello Dave.
I have a similar issue with J44. Heating suddenly went full hot in the middle of the summer. Have to switch the fan off or I boil. There is also a fuse which has blown.
Not got around to fixing it yet as I `ve been advised that it is probably a cable short behind the front bumper. So that lot has to come off to start the diagnostic and inspection.
Can`t help more than that I`m afraid.

Re: Cabin Heater
Hi rosemary. This does sound like your dual heater valve has failed but I would check the relevant fuses and connections before changing the valve. If it does turn out to be the valve and you are doing the job yourself give Neville a call at North East Jag Spares. He supplied mine at a very competitive price and was delivered the next day.

Re: Cabin Heater
Hello Mike and Jeff
Thanks for the quick replies, I've checked all the fuses and nothing is broken.
I do have a new valve bought ages ago from JustJags when I had unexplained loss of coolant, thought it might
be the valve having read it's a known trouble area, but it turned out to be the pipe I perviously mentioned (a piece of rubbish really, Jaguar should be ashamed).
I'm booking the car in to our village garage for an MOT and I'll get them to change the valve at the same time, I'll
let you know whether it fixes the problem. I've also had a stainless steel pipe made to replace the temporary
reinforced rubber tubing the French Garage fitted last summer. I've been tempted to leave the French repair in place (it's much better than Jaguar's) the stainless steel is even better than the rubbish used by Jaguar. (up yours Jaguar).

Re: Cabin Heater
Not totally down to Jaguar. The 2.7 is a Jaguar/Citroen/Peugot collaboration.
The problem is the French don`t understand the English and we can`t understand the French. Hardly an ideal starting point!

Re: Cabin Heater
Its possible the heat was not from the CD Player and actually heat from the Climate Control Module burning out, especially if the problem has been there a while, the printed circuit board has no fuse whatsoever and when the valve goes faulty it still asks for power, with nothing to power up the feed cable gets hotter and hotter until the solder track melts and finally breaks that part of the circuit, if this is the problem you may find the new heater valve behaves the same way, if so you will need to have the Climate Control Module taken out and repaired, there are two types of Module depending on whether you have the large Sat Nav screen or not, it is also advisable to have an inline fuse fitted to the CCM to prevent further episodes, personally I would fit a fuse at both the CCM and at the Valve. Good info on fault finding the system here http://jaguarclimatecontrol.com/diagnose/#ccm-versions

Re: Cabin Heater
Hello Doug
Sounds like a write off scenario. I opened your link, read it, and thought here we are again, i.e. a scrapping decision, I was close to this in Nov 2012 when most of the top end of the engine was unnecessarily replaced trying to find a mistaken mis-fire by the local Jaguar Main Dealer, turned out after Jaguar themselves got involved to be the need for a new Gearbox/Torque Convertor. My contribution to all this was £5K, this excludes a contribution from Jaguar, for the labour involved changing the gearbox, I think they were a bit embarrassed .
So has the time come! Can it all be switched off to prevent any more damage, the car goes really well at the moment.

Don`t discount buying second hand parts from reputable suppliers, Dave. Often a fraction or the price of new kit which can often save the day.

Re: Cabin Heater
Thanks Mike
I think alternative suppliers/repairers have got to be the favoured option now,
they are often more knowledgeable than the Main Dealers especially with the diagnostics
I was literally on the brink of buying an XF, on Monday (yesterday) in fact but this has
stopped me in my tracks.

Re: Cabin Heater
Well I've had the Heater valve replaced today, however it's still blowing hot air out of the passenger side and controllable on the drivers side. Has the Climate Control Module failed in it's last position, any suggestions. Would a Jaguar Diagnostic at a Main Dealer show up a fault with the RCCM, I have no alarms or warnings showing. I see replacement RCCM's on ebay are anywhere between £120 and £180 and a Diagnostic is around £60 with a Dealer for nothing really, so it's a dilemma .

Re: Cabin Heater
Dave,
I have a similar issue myself which may or may not be down to some broken of chaffed cable across the infamous front bumper beam. One idea.
The second is control module failure or partial failure. You need a good independent man to diagnose and fix.
As regards diagnostic costs and perhaps looking at issues yourself, there are two currently in favour with several of us here working these BB`s. PTJS1 uses the Torque download (paid for is better for about £3) in conjunction with an Android phone and Jon Jefferies and I both have iCarsoft i930 units as here.http://www.diagnostic-world.com/pages/L ... 104046.cfm Several other members also use other alternatives. Having a diagnostic tool now appears essential to many of us. Even with the capital outlay, such a unit is definitely the thing to go for and add to your tool kit.
Montana 5,,,our Doug is our wizard with this type of issue. Hopefully he will drop along shortly and be able to further assist.

Re: Cabin Heater
Dave, I agree with Mike, you really need an electrical specialist, or a trusted Jaguar independent that you use, unlike the Dealers, most of the indy's are repairing the RCCM's themselves these days, the other reason for using an indy is that even if the RCCM is repaired there is still the possibility of a damaged wire somewhere between the RCCM and the DCCV. If you felt confident enough you could remove the RCCM, first remove Glove Box and the unit sits up behind where Glove Box is, unplug two plugs, you will have to drill out 4 rivets to open the box, then repair damaged Track on PCB, Bolt or PVC Tape together again. You could also remove the box and take it to your local Electronics Repair Man, I'm sure he would be able to repair it for you.
Here is a picture I found on another web site, of a burnt Track, not always burnt at the same place.

Re: Cabin Heater
Thanks Mike, thanks Doug, I have finally succumbed after 3 Jags in a row, and am buying an AUDI A6 2.7TDi. When asked if I wanted to P/X the S-Type the salesman laughed with relief when I said no, he said his offer wouldn't amount to my expectations anyway, I asked why and his response was reliability, I was offered a derisory figure at another sales outlet for P/X against a similar Audi but the colour wasn't what I wanted anyway.
I am keeping the S-Type albeit for a short while whilst I decide what to do with it. I feel I can't sell it in the state it is currently.
I will probably buy a RCCM from jojags ltd and see if that fixes it, I don't have enough confidence in attempting a repair on the existing.

Re: Cabin Heater
Sorry to hear that, Dave.
Reliability is not one of the S-types strong points.
Try Andy at Auto Reserve for the heater unit also. His prices and service are very good. then there is ebay which can be very productive as can Eurojag who offer good warranty with every part sold.

Re: Cabin Heater
Hi Rosemary, the most likely cause of your problem is a broken wire ( white/yellow in colour) in the loom behind the front bumper.
I have had the same fault on my 2005 Stype 2.7 Diesel.
I also came to the same cross road, change the car or keep it. But as a new car would cost a lot more than I would spend in repaires over the next few years, so I kept the car.
Good luck
