Paring an i phone

Having sucessfully connected my i phone to my very recently purchased 2005 S type when making a call I can hear the remote end clearly via the car sound system but the mic in the car does not pick up my voice. Only when I switch the i phone away from the cars system can I be heard by the remote end.

In a nutshell the cars onboard mic appears to be muted. Anyone out there give me a clue ?
