Hints and tips for the fuel system

Postby Mark_B » Sat Oct 15, 2005 1:02 am

This forum looks a bit lonley with no one posting to it, so here goes.

Some things I noticed concerning fuel etc..

Smell of petrol in boot/in car?? Blast of vapour when removing filler cap? :? If so and your rear window surround seal has been leaking many years, your fuel tank could be well rusty underneath, you can't see this properly until you remove it. Welding  the hole is a good way of blowing yourself up (email me privately if you want to know how I weld a tank without explosion).

Noisy fuel pump? Gets louder?? Blocked filter in the intake!. Vacuum in the pump causing cavitation. The filter is plastic gauze, push-on fit, a bit fragile. Kettle descaler, followed by a dishwasher cycle cleared the filter gauze and restored quiet operation after refitting. Tank draindown needed before removal. Can get away with pinching off some relavent hoses with molegrips to reduce the amount of draining needed.

I know the design of the gauze filter changed at some point to prevent it moving and restricting the pick-up tube, but it is still a pain to check/clean. One modification I will be making soon is to remove the gauze strainer and plumb in one of those plastic see-through fuel filters in the rubber tubing before the fuel pump. The gauze one is only to protect the fuel pump, the big metal filter protects the injectors. The new filter would catch more crud then the strainer, be very easy to replace and make the metal bodied filter last much longer.

Pop,

You wrote "One modification I will be making soon is to remove the gauze strainer and plumb in one of those plastic see-through fuel filters in the rubber tubing before the fuel pump."

Did you get round to doing this? Was it successful?

You may have guessed I have a noisy pump (just filled the tank aswell. Doh!!) If I have to drain etc I would be happy throwing the filter away and replacing it with an in-line one, but which in-line filter?

Well, my definition of 'soon' is normally measured in years rather then months  but I have bought the filters. They are the metal/glass ones that I think may be designed for WW Beatle engines. I didn't like the look of the plastic disposable ones, I wouldn't want them leaking in the boot! Due to the small diameter of the inlet/outlets I worked out that two units plumbed in parallel may be sensible. All I need to do now is work out how to manifold them together with suitable valves to make cleaning them easy.

quick point, you don't need to drain the entire tank down, just pinch off some of the hoses with mole grips (plus bits of soft wood i.e. clothes pegs) to protect the pipe from the serrated jaws. you just drain down the small tank at the bottom of about a pint. :-)

Hints and tips for the fuel system

Inspired by cya's post I found and unwrapped the filters which I obtained at last year's autumn spares day. Guess what, there F!*$* different.

One is tapped internally, (which I wanted) but the other has a hose push-on barb. Also is the nasty plastic disposable one which I've had for some time but won't be using. Yeah, like I've a receipt

Those filters look the business, bad luck about the different connections though!

No problem. I've taken some time to plan out the connection diagram, it's looking good. Hope this helps.

In the mean time I have just replaced my filter, it only took a 20 minutes to do. (Thanks Mark_B for the tip on pinching off the hoses). I did have a CAC3763 but have replaced it with the much better and bigger CBC5649 which fits in exactly the same way. Fuel pump is now nice and quiet.

Hmmm. and I'm feeling guilty for inspiring you Pop.
