Hi
I am replacing the fuel pump on my 1995 XJS 4.0 and while getting access to the fuel tank noted that the larger hose connector on the breather assembly at the top of the fuel tank did not have a pipe connected to it.
Is this correct for this model? I can't suck or blow through the connector but I'm not sure that means anything. I have run the car with a full tank and haven't noted any fuel smells in the boot. I also can't see any obvious connection points for the other end of a breather hose. Is this correct and if not what should be there?
Thanks

Re: XJS 4.0 Breather on Fuel Tank
Hi,
This is interesting as this is next on my list to go through. I probably would of thought the same as you.
Firstly, I do not know the definitive answer, but as you said you tried to suck and blow through it and there are no vapour fumes here, so it must be sealed up for these later models.
To put your mind at rest, it appears that from production year Nov.1994 (1995-6 MY) the factory changed this set-up.
I have this later model and your picture is exactly the same as mine (but a 1995 V12 6.0 Coupe).
The previous models, maybe early facelift 1991 up to Nov.1994 had a rubber hose connected here that led to the filler neck (see pics).
The 3rd picture is my car and that older long rubber hose is now just this short one into the top of the tank.
So is it a fuel filling neck, vapour fumes return drain to tank thing or even the other way around?
The very helpful chap on YouTube...Jaguar XJS OCD, posted a video on... 'Jaguar XJS 6.0L 1994 Fuel Breather Fault Findings and you can see this older set-up.
I would still be interested to know why Jaguar changed this.
I hope this can assist you.

Re: XJS 4.0 Breather on Fuel Tank
Thanks Nick it is re-assuring to hear that another car of the same period has the same set up. FYI my car has the same angled breather tube connected to the filler neck however I think the other end of this is one of the internal tubes that poke up into the breather flange on the top of the tank. When you remove this breather flange there are two open pipes poking up into a space within the flange. I think the pipe on the LHS (as you look from the back) goes to that breather connection to the filler neck. Not sure about the one on the right, it might be blanked off as on my 4.0 car I can't see another breather exiting on the right of the tank. Maybe the 6.0 has two breathers.

This is all very helpful.
I will be taking my tank out in a few weeks time, so will be able to have a better look at it then.
Good luck with your fuel pump as I have two to change for my 6.0.
I must just make sure that I don't strike a lighter under there to see what I am doing.
