i am currently working on the front of the XJS ,

both headlight bowl front surrounds ( that hold the headlight brackets ) had rotted through in several places, also the front middle crossmember that holds the upper wings to the lower scuttles and also the bumper trims had rotted away on the ends,
the total cost for new parts at the front was ablut £180 ( two surrounds, two scuttles , one crossmember )

whilst there i had replaced the inner wing top supports whch are a given to rot away , these are £40 ish each

just got to finish some spot welding, prime up , and paint with smooth white hammerite , then underseal where needed,

the daft thing about all this repair up front is that the radiator cross member had no rot at all and no repairs requred , and i know the front subframe is fine as well,

...and paint with smooth white hammerite...

Ah the benefits of having a white car!. Many of the 'unseen' areas of mine have had similar hammerite treatment with a 2" paintbrush

i know what you mean pop , lol

things like the inside of the boot area and the floor , and the inside of some panels get the brush treatment,
but other area's that you can see when the bonnet is poped etc get the spray on treatment, its comes out much smoother ,

i have also refurbished the top crossmember that goes over the rad, the one with the overflow ballance pipe on and the coils units , this was brushed underneath , but sprayed on top , black that is,

the ballance pipe has also been replaced with one that didnt crumble in my hands, this was cleaned on a 6" bench grinder with a wire wheel, zink plated then finished in smooth black hammerite,

the engine water ballance pipe had the same treatment , and looks like new, while i was at it i replaced all the water hoses ,
and removed the viscouse fan mount and jockey wheel, i am goin all electric cooling,

picked up a good rad on ebay yesterday for £65 8)

and a full set ( everything ) of genuine red carpets the other day for £37 :D 8)

so will be busy for a while , lol
