the body number , which has no relation to the VIN apart from being on the same vehicle is located on a spot welded tag on the nearside rear valance by the bumper support tube ,

it will be sprayed body colour, and if removed will leave an unpainted patch on the valance , it was simply the body production number before being allocated to the assembly line .

thanks guys, i am trying to help a guy with his car, he thinks he has an Insignia, I'm not so sure, and as I only have Insignia XJS body numbers and not vins, I need to tell him where to look

just looked at my pictures of the rebuild

the body number is deffo on the rear valance, inboard of the left nearside rear bumper mount tube, the tag looks to be about three inches long, and is about two inches under the body lip that runs round under the boot , if you know what i mean

That 94 car will have "big bumpers", which means that the body number tag isn't easily accessible.

If you're very lucky, you can release the spring tab clips which hold the centre under-part of the bumper cover from the metal retaining strip, very carefully pull down the under-part of the bumper cover and use a small mirror attached to a 12" rod and then you MIGHT be able to read the body number.

I'll sort some photos out at the weekend and show you what I mean.

Paul, I am waiting for pics of the car, I think i know it and am 100% sure it is NOT an Insginia, no Insignia badges, colour is Platinum and Doeskin, both stock colours, so unless it has Insignia style seats the he has not bought what he thinks he has bought!!

Chassis number should help shouldn't it? I believe they were built in a fairly small time window?

This model is one that I have lusted after for many years especially blue on blue colour scheme, there was a beauty at Southern Day the year that all the Gazebos got destroyed, how many years ago....five? Six?

Tony, correct "all the Invoices say Insignia" is the quote

Insignia were built very late 1992 to June 1994, First car 16/12 /92 and last car 12/04/1994

mainly 40's circa 320 cars and a few XJS circa 60 cars, although a few new ones have popped up recently (all 40's) hence my figures are the best estimate there is

I was always told no records were kept and no defintive figure was available, and, as there is no indendifier in the vin to find the correct number was an impossible task

However on a JH visit I was handed 12 A4 sheets, detailing the body numbers thst went to SVO and when for Insignia work to be done, from these body numbers, you can track the body number to a vin, from this vin via another system you get the full spec on the car, right down to the badges, wheels, seat belts etc that were fitted, so from this I built a nearly complete data base on all Insignia 40's ( a few odd details were not recorded by Jaguar). As this was a time consuming excercise I only did 40's the 57x XJS body numbers were not tracked. So all I have is the XS body number, country of destination, date offf trim, date passed to sales, and track sheet number

the key thing to remember with these cars is that the few customers who ordered them could have what they wanted in essence, most cars were Jaguar demos of one sort another. So it is possible to have a standard paint colour and standard trim, but the trim is to Insignia design and spec, annaline leather everywhere, hence me needing the body number for this XJS to check it out, not all cars were high spec either, I had a 1993 base 3.2 XJ6 Insignia, Amethyst Blue, Insignia badges, steel wheels, cloth trim!!
