Trim Colour Matching

Hi all and especially Paul ('cos I think he'll know the answer),

I have an Oatmeal leather trimmed interior with a black dash in my '93.5MY Coupe (Hatch-back!) and wish to fit a beige dash.

If I recall, the dash was not a direct match for the trim code, e.g. Oatmeal (ANT) could be fitted with a slightly different shade dash. Do you know what was offered with what or can point to somewhere to find such detail?

There's a '92 car locally being broken for spares (anyone wants anything let me know but it is on eBay). It has Magnolia (AEM) trim. would that beige dash suit my car?

I confess to being a little confused about your trim codes and matching trim.

The easy answer is that Magnolia seat trim in XJSs was generally matched with a Barley fascia panel, although as you know well, I suspect that Jaguar would do whatever the customer required.

The bit that confuses me is that Oatmeal in late XJSs is always AGD or AGF. I've not seen Oatmeal referred to as ANT. I've also not seen ANT on an XJS trim code sticker although, again, I'm sure jaguar would have fitted anything if paid enough!

It gets slightly more confusing in that Doeskin is AEE in XJSs but doeskin can be referred to on XJ6s under trim code ANT !

If Doeskin is fitted in an XJS, it would normally have a Doeskin fascia.

Late XJSs often have Cream (NDR) seats. This is matched with a Coffee fascia (apart from US cars which often have a Warm Charcoal fascia!)

So, what colour fascia would suit? Well, I think a Doeskin, Barley or Coffee fascia would look fine, assuming that you have either Doeskin, Oatmeal, Magnolia or Cream seats!

I would like to see your trim code sticker as I'm still stuck on what colour seats you actually have! Perhaps you could email me a copy of it?

with custom bodywork like that who can vouch for the authenticity of the interior matching the factory trim details ?

as i would have thought that the whole interior would have been bespoke, and trim matched throughout ?

Some of the colours won't necessarily match and I'd hate to buy the wrong one and find I don't like it (I think Jaguar got it right!).

That is a good point though. I've never stopped to think about having the fascia re-trimmed, but might that be more expensive than simply replacing it with a genuine job?

On my car, it's only the rear seat squab backwards that's bespoke but it was done using genuine Jaguar materials (e.g. Rattan carpet an Oatmeal seat leather). The rest is OE, but not necessarily what was in my car from new (it's never going to be concours so why try is my thought). Originally it had half-leather trim as can be seen in the photo's on the members site. I'll be getting the car out this weekend so can access the VIN plate.

I have a trim colour combination chart from Julia but I think this is for the Celebration cars (I'll have to scan and send it to you). This lists the overall interior colour against each trim item. So for example, Doeskin gets the same name fascia as does Chiltern Tweed, but "Barley", "Cotswold Tweed" and "Magnolia" get a Barley fascia. There must be something like this for the 93MY interior ... somewhere.

I agree with your thoughts on fitting what-ever the customer wanted; never refuse a sale! Black was an option rather than standard at this time I think. Maybe the company that bought my car new got it wrong for me!

I also agree most colours' would probably be OK, but I'd like it to look "right". Guess once we know what trim it is, Barley might suit 'cos that the one on offer at the moment and in fact, it might be easier to visit it in my car and see!

If your car has had replacement seats, that might be why I'm a bit confused as to the ANT code.

"Theoretically", I don't think Oatmeal or trim code ANT was a colour option for your car. Of course, we all know that just because it isn't officially listed doesn't mean it wasn't fitted!

I have the colour combo charts for all the series of cars from 1991-1996 and, based on those, it would also seem that Oatmeal wasn't fitted to big-bumper AJ6 cars.

As I said, if you can email me a photo of your colour trim plate then we both may have learnt something new!

Hi Paul,

be surprised! It is ANT as you can see on the attached photo.

So, am I right in believing Magnolia trim comes with a Barley fascia (normally)? What colour fascia did Oatmeal usually come with? As you said and I think, it will be OK with Barley and I intend to see it anyway taking a piece of my trim (removed seat repair panel) to check.

is there any chance of posting a picture or two of the interior ?

i'm lucky , as my interior is nothing like any other colour in the trim range, lol
Mulberry ( Ox blood red ) leather is the only one they made for the HE and later XJS , usually with white paintwork.....
though i have seen a black one with Mulberry fitted


another option is to buy the closest match you can find, then get it colour-treated to match your interior, its not that hard to get done, and i have had brand new oatmeal/whatever trim colour matched to my Mulberry finish ,
its only spray on vinyl paint , as per the original , as cows dont generally come in jaguar spec colours , lol

now , this might throw a spanner in , or make no difference,


but the Oatmeal interior on my XJ8 is matched with ' Antelope ' dash trims and door tops , this is from a 1999 car , this Antelope colour is a much darker muddy coffee colour compared to the Oatmeal seats and lower dash etc, this trim is however known as AGD for the X308 ,

Tks for the trim code photo. Problem solved! (up to a point...)

You don't have Oatmeal, you have Doeskin! (I still don't think Oatmeal was a colour option for big-bumper AJ6 cars.)

The giveaway was when you said that you had 1/2 leather, which to Jaguar means you have a "cloth" trim code not a leather trim code. ANT is the cloth trim code of Doeskin, more usually fitted in XJ6s and not often seen in cloth in XJSs. It's only when it's all leather that Doeskin is coded AEE.

So, you have Doeskin and the usual dash fascia colour for that would also be Doeskin.

However, it's always a matter of taste. In my opinon (which is worth abolutely no more than anyone else's when it comes to personal taste!) any one out of Barley, Doeskin or Coffee fasia looks fine with any of the "Cream /Beige" trim colours which includes Doeskin, Magnolia, Cream, Oatmeal & Coffee.

They will all look "right", so I think this is going to be just personal taste. But if you want to be "correct" I believe the right "light" dash is Doeskin.

Guess I'll have to see about buying, removing and fitting the Barley fascia on offer to see if I like it (I think I will).

BB, I have placed more photo's on the car on the Vehicle Register (and up-dated the new trim info.!).

Photo's include; interior incl. rear seat up and down, fascia and rear of the car with tailgate closed. Look for L971 JVV.
