Door handles - early facelift

Postby chrisw » Mon Jun 28, 2010 2:20 pm

I've recently picked up an early facelift 4.0 to add to my collection, and apart from a few small problems so far - seat electrics do weird things when powered up and exhaust manifold blows - the most annoying is that both door locks have gone.

I'm guessing that someone tried to break in at some stage and damaged them. My question is, do I replace both barrels and have them reset to match the existing keys, or do I try and find a second hand pair of handles/barrels with a key to fit?

Ideas/comments/places to look?

Thanks,

Chris

Try Graham Hallet at Grublogger:

I've always found him very pleasant to deal with and if he hasn't got it immediately available, chances are he'll get it and remember to ask you if you still want it. Four or five lock barrels shouldn't be too difficult.

I think the XJ40 used the same barrels (according the Jaguar Classic Parts website) so you might be able to get a set off one of those.

The exhaust manifolds are most likely cracked, which is why they are blowing. Alas you will need a pair of new ones, fortunately still available. I got a set from SNG. Easy DIY job if you have a good set of spanners.

Al,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've emailed Grublogger and will await their response.

Steve,

Thought as much. I'll blow some bubbles down onto the manifolds next weekend and see what blows. Couldn't find them on SNGs website, but will see exactly what has gone before I start chasing some new ones.

Shame that none of it is as simple as the s1 XJ6 barnfind. Just ordered a brand new pair of door locks from SNG and will be extremely easy to fit.

I have found that the SNG web site is not always up to date. If in doubt a quick phone call to their parts department will determine availability of the bits you want. Don't forget to order new gaskets (to head and down pipe) and down pipe studs and nuts as well.
